#Radiation in Japan: Nosebleed, Diarrhea, Lack of Energy in Children in Koriyama City, Fukushima

Once a malicious "baseless rumor" on the net, now it is written up in a regional newspaper with readership in Tokyo and Kanto area.

Tokyo Shinbun (paper edition only, 6/16/2011) reports that many children in Koriyama City in Fukushima Prefecture, 50 kilometers from Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, are suffering inexplicable nosebleed, diarrhea, and lack of energy since the nuke plant accident.

Quick translation of the article:

What's happening to children in Koriyama City in Fukushima right now? Nosebleed, diarrhea, lack of energy - "Effect of radiation unknown" says the doctor

Report by Ao Ideta, Tokyo Shinbun, June 16, 2011

On June 12, a non-profit organization called "The Bridge to Chernobyl" (チェルノブイリへのかけはし) held a free clinic in Koriyama City in Fukushima Prefecture, 50 kilometers [west] from Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant.

Worried about the effect of radiation exposure, 50 families brought their children to see the doctor.

A 39-year-old mother of two told the doctor that her 6-year-old daughter had nosebleed everyday for 3 weeks in April. For 1 week, the daughter bled copiously from both nostrils. The mother said their doctor told her it was just a seasonal allergy from pollen. Her other child, 2-year-old son, had nosebleed from end of April to May.

The pediatrician from The Bridge to Chernobyl, Yurika Hashimoto, told the mother it was hard to determine whether the nosebleed was the result of radiation exposure, but they should have the blood test done for white blood cells. It was important to keep record, the doctor advised.

The family move out temporarily from Koriyama City to Saitama Prefecture after the March 11 earthquake, but came back to Koriyama at the end of March.

The mother said about 10% of pupils at the elementary school have left Koriyama. Each school in Koriyama decides whether to have the pupils drink local milk that the school provide, which tends to concentrate radioactive materials. In her daughter's school, it is up to the parents to decide. But the mother said she let the daughter drink milk with other children because the daughter didn't want to get excluded by other children for not drinking milk with them.

A 40-year-old father of a 4-month-old baby daughter was so worried that he never let the daughter go outside, even though she didn't exhibit any ill effect of radiation so far. He said, "I'm so worried. I don't know how to defend ourselves."

I [the reporter of the story] used the radiation monitoring device over the low bush near the place where this event was being held. It measured 2.33 microsieverts/hour. As I raised the device higher, the radiation level went down to 1 microsievert/hour. The highest air radiation measured in Koriyama City was 8.26 microsieverts/hour on March 15. Since middle of May, it has been about 1.3 microsievert/hour.

If you live one year in a place with 1.3 microsievert/hour radiation, the cumulative radiation will exceed 11 millisieverts. [And that's only the external exposure.]

A 40-year-old mother with a 6-year-old son was angry, and said "Doctors, researchers, they all say different things. I don't understand how the evacuation areas are determined. Take Iitate-mura, for example. They just let the villagers get exposed to high radiation for a month, and when the air radiation level got lower they told them to move out. We can't trust the national government, we can't trust Fukushima prefectural government." Her family just built a new house, and she was not sure how they could survive economically if they moved. If they moved, when would they be able to come back? What about cost of moving, or the psychological effect on her child? She just couldn't decide what to do.

As much as I understand how people are tied to a particular land both economically and culturally, the health of the young comes first. I imagine other disaster situations: cities being air bombed, fires wrecking whole communities, and in those situations you see governments moving large populations to safer areas, with the young and their mothers being the first out.

If parents are abusive to their children, the state intervenes to find a safer place for that child. In this context, the children are being abused by the aftereffects of poor governmental oversight and crony capitalism in the nuclear power industry. The proper response by the authorities would be the construction of new towns/cities in uncontaminated areas of Shikoku, southern Honshu and Kyushu. At the very minimum, give young parents who wish to leave, but who don't have the funds to do so, *the option* of going. Personally, I would mandate that anyone under 40 should be removed, as their health will be compromised, and possibly the genetic integrity of their children's children, etc. One can only imagine the dramatic drain on the nation's health care system that will follow -- already burdened for years, this is certain to bankrupt it.

Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment by Yablokov et al, was in reprint, available at amazon for kindle, and google search should yield pdf doc. READ Things like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome predicted to be worldwide. Apple pectin good for removing the radioactive elements in body; minerals a plus, safe vegetables, Vit K. Avoid dairy and meats and seafood now also... besides many details of specific health problems, cause and effect, book also ends with specific recommendations. 5,000 slavic language studies used, over 1,000 cited. Scientists were harasssed, some harmed, killed, lost livelihoods to gather and report the truth... the IAEA/WHO was totally unscrupulous in using only 350 English language docs and dismissing concern. First most important, move away from danger zones; younger are more at risk. Many Blessings to you all.

Hello !

I've got some photos almost 3 months after tsunami :

"Japan: three months after the quake
Japan continues to deal with the enormous task of cleaning up and moving forward three months after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeast coast. Local authorities are still dealing with the damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and now the rainy season, which could increase the risk of disease as workers clear away the debris, is approaching. Collected here are images from this past weekend marking the three-month point, as well then-and-now images of the destruction shot by Kyodo News via the Associated Press. -- Lloyd Young (29 photos total)"

"She just couldn't decide what to do."

Pathetic... As usual. Some of those people start to try to think by themselves... but eventually they fall short.

"I don't know what to do. I think, I feel that the authorities are lying, but... i don't know what to do".

Still a lot of work needs to be done in japanese brains.

Meanwhile, thousands of people have been , and will be exposed to radiations.

Robbie001 sez:

“Thousands of children live in and consume locally grown foods from areas in the Ukraine where the soil is still contaminated with radioactive cesium,” said Svendsen, a research assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics."

“Hundreds of these children may grow up with lungs that have been damaged by chronic exposure to radioactive cesium,” he said. “The long-term prognosis of these children is poor, and many will likely develop significant respiratory problems as they age.”

http://www.sph.sc.edu/news/svendsen1.htm

"The National CFIDS Foundation Inc. of Needham, MA, has announced its formal disease model for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) also known as Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) as well as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). According to the NCF, a subgroup of patients with CFS fit a unique disease profile based on a model for a radioactive toxin. The Foundation has also noted that CFS has been previously identified as a characteristic aftermath of radioecological catastrophe. A lengthier article including references will be in the fall edition of the newsletter."

http://www.ncf-net.org/PressReleases.htm#nal

"Summary Post-radiation syndrome is proposed to be chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or a chronic fatigue syndromelike illness, initiated by exposure to ionizing radiation. This view is supported by the nitric oxide/peroxynitrite (NO/
ONOO–) cycle mechanism, the putative etiologic mechanism for CFS and related illnesses. Ionizing radiation may initiate illness by increasing nitric oxide levels via increased activity of the transcription factor NF-jB and consequent increased synthesis of the inducible nitric oxide synthase. Two types of components of the nitric oxide/peroxynitrite cycle have been studied in post-radiation syndrome patients and shown to be elevated. The symptoms and signs of post-radiation syndrome and its chronicity are similar or identical to those of chronic fatigue syndrome and can be explained as being a consequence of nitric oxide/peroxynitrite cycle etiology. While the data available to test this view are limited, it provides for the first time a comprehensive explanation for post-radiation syndrome."

radiation poison in the children. This happened in Russia after they had a explosion in the nuclear facility.

It really infuriates me that the government has not had children evacuate from these areas. Obviously, the amounts of radiation they are being exposed to are way too high!!!!!! There should be an international law against this. I just don't understand it. My heart goes out to these parents. They do not have anywhere else to go and they have been brainwashed by the Japanese system. For their entire lives they have been taught that being part of the group is very important.

repost of a comment i saw on facebook:

(by user "Tokyo Kids & Radiation")
Nosebleeds are common from this. the mucus membrane shows signs quickly. It is true, I have heard it from those who have seen it with their own eyes. This is reminiscent of something a woman who spent 20 years going back and forth to Chernobyl told my wife: "The children were the counter". Kids are more affected and therefore become a measurement tool for how bad things are. This is something we SHOULD NOT LET HAPPEN ANY LONGER!

What do you mean "she couldn't decide what to do"? Send the kid away to family or friends in another city for a couple weeks and see if he feels better. Keep him there if he does. Is that so hard? Damnit.

I see nothing has changed in japan since I lived there. Reminds me of the time the prefectural govt sent the fire brigade to put out the criticality fire at Tokaimura. Incompetent to say the least. Got to love those proponents of Nuclear power.

I have nothing to add; however my deepest and sincerest thoughts to the inhabitants of Japan. Given your history with the nuclear era, as an American I feel more then guilty for your state of affairs. I just want to let the world know that Americans although at times ignorant of the world, there is a good few that truly care. Thus, I pray and beseech you all to keep hope; for you Japan, have a proud history of overcoming the devil himself. May G-d have mercy on you all and bless you all with the reward of his wisdom and grace. I, for one, have nothing but sympathy and empathy to your suffering. I hope that the world will ever overcome its own misery and pray for a future of a calmer rhythm. Unfortunately, the climb to the top is always a step back into time. Us Americans are seeing this incarnate, as we fight and kill the people that we promise democracy. We bring the world a little bit at a time back into the dark ages. I wish and I pray for you all in Japan because the world over has never seen such exemplary citizenry, that most governments in their wildest dreams could ever fathom. This is precisely why I sadden at the calamity of the people of the greatest human collective of such novel, peaceful and intellectual civilization; that have fought to keep the harmony of nature in tuned with one’s life; that being the people of Japan.

May you all fight to preserve your culture and excellence in the face of such adversity.

-G.U.J.V.

Guys, it's not so easy. Ever tried to live in a world of open questions, where some people behave totally "normal", others not, within a threat that's invisible and "debatable"? The effect of behaving differently than most others is much more apparent than the threat of disease a few years down the line. People in Japan are trying to find out where they are on this and there are few clear answers. They aren't stupid or need your clever advice from a safe distance,

@helios, thanks for the boston globe link. I shared it with my Japanese readers in Japanese blog. Sometimes it's harder to see pictures of Japan in Japan, and it's been the case these three months.

The mother in the article who lets her child drink milk with other kids at school, she's been told all along that it's safe. Not just milk but just about everything. Vegetables, soil, fish, air, they are safe as long as the government says so. It is only slowly dawning on many people in Japan that a government lies, even theirs, even in time of disaster and crisis like this.

They are finding out also that so-called experts with education from the nation's top schools have been telling them lies (or non-truth) along with the government.

For a country based on mutual trust, it's hard to even imagine for many people that they cannot trust their government and intellectuals.

"She says a rift has developed between the group of mothers in her community who are concerned about the radiation levels and the other mothers – who comprise the vast majority – who are going about their lives as normal. “Parents and teachers and doctors all say Kashiwa is fine,” says Yuki Osaku, her friend and also a mother of two. Ms. Osaku says that her children now play with different friends due to the divide."

http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2011/06/17/the-geiger-club-mothers-bust-silent-radiation-consensus/

She said her friends do the same, causing friction between them and other mothers who think they are overreacting—and making them and their children social outcasts in a society that values conformity.

"They think I am a monster parent," says Ikue Sakai, 27, who has two sons ages three and six, and also bought a dosimeter. "I keep getting asked by other parents, 'Why don't you just move? What do you want?' "

"This is what it's like in Japan," says Ms. Osaku. "If one person does something different, everyone else looks at us like we're strange."

The consequences are starting to manifest it self.
We can charf up a lott about everything and blame whatever exept the radiation.
I was shure that stage was empty by now. This is the real deal. Start to use masks, the best protection you have for now.
I belive it to be Hot particles that are burning thru the skin.
And dont forgett, there is a posebility that there are at present a hole range of isotops in the air, and non of them is mesurable with a Geiger counter. And some of the isotosp are realy dangerous and this situation must not be underestemated.

Do you by now, start to realize what it means with a Nightmare situation, a paralel world. A world like nothing has happened, and this image of everyday life is now gone, and the tranqility and peacefull beuty outside, is just a ilusion.
That world is right now dangerous and a mercyless killer.
Its becomed a race against time, every day that goes, prolongs the suffering of inocent people.
Thats the chrime against humanity.
People that had absolutly nothing what so ever with this nucklear ind. is paying the highest prise for this, their future and their lifes.
Thats a chrime against humanity.

Dear Sirs,

We read with horror the news from Japan, and it seems your city maybe affected. We hope that is not the case. Should it be so we have something to propose.

We believe that temporarily sending children abroad maybe a good solution to reduce exposure to radiation. In addition they would learn Spanish, and that is always useful.

We are a small company but we would like to offer our help. We are based in Montevideo Uruguay.

We offer:

1. Housing and food for 30 children and teachers for free for one year.

2. Also, the building for the uruguay japanese school, for free for 2 years, including electricity water and heating.

We are gathering funds to pay for the airline tickets and to purchase furniture and equipment.

Is your city interested in sending students and teachers?

If more sponsors join in we can increase the number of children and of classes. As soon as we have cities in Japan interested in this we will spread the word to our friends to gather funds.

We hope to be of some help to you in this difficult moment.

Sincerely,

Amelia Copello
