Ministry of Education Admits to Plutonium in Iitate-mura in Fukushima

35 kilometers northwest of Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant.

Jiji Tsushin (5:42PM JST 9/30/2011):

文部科学省は30日、福島県双葉町と浪江町、飯舘村の土壌から、福島第1原発事故によるとみられるプルトニウムが検出されたことを明らかにした。同原発の敷地以外で、検出されたのは初めてという。

Ministry of Education and Science disclosed on September 30 that plutonium has been detected from the soil in Futaba-machi, Namie-machi and Iitate-mura in Fukushima Prefecture, which derived from the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant accident. According to the Ministry, it is the first detection of plutonium outside the plant.

Readers of this blog have been alerted to the existence of neptunium-239 (which decays into plutonium-239) in the soil of Iitate-mura, so it should be no surprise. It is no surprise at all either that it has taken more than 6 months for the Ministry of (Re-)Education to admit.

Neptunium-239 has reportedly been detected in Date City also. That's even further away from the plant (60 kilometers).

Are there any numbers yet?

Well I am wondering how much plutonium has been spilled in the ocean? But I guess we will never now, the gamma emitters are bad enough but the alpha emitters are worse, especially when injested. I wont eat anything anymore from the pacific ocean. And what about the absorbtion of gamma emitters by plants? Plutonium works like Calcium, which means it will go into your bones and emmit for thousends of years, even your ashes will still be poluted with plutonium. The best antidote is to suplement your diet with large doses of calcium.

In Chernobyl it was mostly Strontium-90 that replaced Calcium, not Plutonium.
Plants etc seemed to live very well with it.
A few malformations here and there.
Not a good idea to eat them though. ;-)

Plutonium detected in Iitate village in Fukushima

TOKYO, Sept. 30, Kyodo

Plutonium has been detected at six locations in Fukushima Prefecture, including Iitate village around 45 kilometers northwest of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, apparently as a result of the crisis at the plant triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, science ministry officials said.

The government has confirmed the spread of plutonium to the village for first time.

The detected amounts of plutonium were small and posed no danger to health, the officials said.

what amount of plutonium poses no danger to health?

Anonymous said...

The bigger issue with plutonium found in these places is that Pu has to be airborne to get to Iitate, meaning people could have inhaled some.

plutonium is one of the most dangerous substances known to man. It is up there with botulism and ricin.

The highest amount of Pu-238 detected was 4 Bq/m2

The highest amount of Pu-239 + Pu-239 detected was 15 Bq/m2

Strontium is higher, maximum around 20,000 Bq/m2 of Strontium-89, 5700 Bq/m2 for Strontium-90.

* Pu-239 + Pu-240

Plutonium detected outside compound of Fukushima plant

TOKYO, Sept. 30, Kyodo

The government has detected plutonium apparently from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant outside the compound of the plant for the first time, science ministry officials said Friday.

The plutonium was detected at six locations in Fukushima Prefecture, including Iitate village around 45 kilometers northwest of the Fukushima complex, they said, adding the amounts were small and posed no danger to health.

The radioactive substance may have been carried by vapor or fine particles from the nuclear plant, said an official of Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant.

Strontium-89, 90 in 79km area and contamination map

I'm sick of hearing how high the numbers are; where they have found new radiation; how bad the food is!

Basically everyone is finished!
Dead, dead, dead....thank the Government for that!

It is deceiving to report Plutonium levels in Becquerels square per meter. The Plutonium contamination occurs in invisible or barely vissible particles of extremely small area. These particles are in general widely separated, and dispersed over a large area. When the high radioactive counts from these particles are diluted by dividing the tiny area of these Plutonium particles by the relatively huge 1 square meter area of inert surface material of minimal counts, very low Becquerel counts of Plutonium per sq meters are reported. Very deceiving. Because it is the microscopic particle that will give you cancer, not the 1 square meter of inert substance. It all comes down to your luck, or the probablity of inhaling or ingesting the particle. A more useful reporting would be the number of Plutonium particles per square meter of area, with an additional report giving the average and maximum strength of these Plutonium particles in counts per second (Becquerels.) Why deceive people with not useful low numbers that do not reflect actual danger?

Thank you Robert, your formulation of the problem is very helpful.

This video clearly shows that the Japanese government find the matter amusing. How can anybody trust them when they behave like this?
