OT: Comment Section of This Blog - 2

There were Jesuits and Finns and a host of other incomprehensible collections in the comment sections for a while (and that stopped, thank you).

And there are comments that several months later suddenly inspire some people in Japan.

Yes in Japan.

There are people in Japan who come to my English blog. They are mostly expats living in Japan, but a sizeable number of Japanese also come. They not only read the post but also the comment sections, curious to see how people outside Japan look at the situation in Japan.

Tokyo Brown Tabby is one of those Japanese. One day back in June, Tabby made a post quoting and translating a comment left by an anonymous reader on my English blog. Somebody read Tabby's post 4 months later, and tweeted, and that spread. It clearly struck a chord. The comment said the following:

-japanese people are still accomplice of a terrible system

It's time for common japanese people to :
-reject the system
-revolt

To this date, we have seen nothing.

They act just like sheep, waiting to be slaughtered.

It's impossible to feel pity for people who clearly don't want to save themselves.

Judging by the reaction to Tabby's post, albeit 4 months late, more Japanese are realizing they've been the sheep (or sheeple), and that they don't need to be.

So, thank you, my readers and those who feel strongly enough to comment, whether it is anger toward TEPCO and the politicians, ridicule against government-bought researchers, unique way to solve the Fuku-I accident, or criticism of the Japanese people. (Or occasional Jesuits and Finns which totally baffle them...)

Things don't unfold at a pace most of us would want, which I suspect is much quicker than what's happening in Japan. Slow as it may be, more and more people in Japan are realizing they don't need to be ruled by a handful of elites whom they no longer trust, and that they don't need to take whatever is given to them, whether it is a nuke plant or a free trade agreement with the US.

A good start.

I sure hope the Japanese people realize this sooner rather than later. Then again it might happen when the abortion rates/radiation related deaths spike.

Reading your blog at times can be very frustrating. Knowing what the J-gov and Tepco are doing to their own people is just sickening. The worst part is that the Japanese people either choose to ignore what's happening or they simply accept it without putting up a fight, because of the "I can't do anything about it" mentality. Some may even get mad if the topic is brought up. (Personal experience)

I'll second that. Will also add that I think people are finding themselves trapped in their lives, with their house loans and car loans, kids tuition fees etc...our situation is one of entrapment-held hostage to our way of life and all that entails. People want this problem to go away but it is actually getting nearer. We are walking in a deep fog with veil upon veil of what we have been brought up to believe as progress and we have little way of fighting back.
Moreover the government is hell bent on trying to ignore the problem and is heading exactly in the wrong direction under the misguided belief that the errors of our ways heretofore are stepping stones to future growth and economic "prosperity". TPP for example will lead to the complete
Disembowelment of Tohoku-it is but agriculture and fishing. Wherein lies the logic of trying to rebuild this area whilst simultaneously ripping out its heart?
Energy depleting forces are set upon the world and here we are contemplating cutting our food security to 13 percent and the mercy of US and Aus. Agribusiness! It beggars belief.
Japan's politicians just cannot grasp the nettle-and that will end in catastrophe for the average person.

The saddest realization is that Japan could wind up annihilating itself simply from the lack of political will of its own people. Eight months after the event, the "demonstrations" in Tokyo are still merely parades of citizens who don't look terribly pissed off. New channels of communication are needed to reach the brainwashed masses.

I have been following this catastrophe from the beginning.


The establishment is waiting for the reactors to cool by themselves. This will take 10 or more YEARS with extreme levels of radiation emitted every second. TEPCO doesn't know how to fix the mess and the government worries about the cost, which is the end of Japan's nuclear power ambitions.

Ten years is a long time, waiting for the 'better outcome' to happen by magic ... day after day for ten years is the wrong strategy. As LaPrimavera and other authors note, every day means more radiation outside the reactors spreading over Japan.

Passive acceptance of 'suffering' and letting big business and the 'free market' fix the reactors is a death sentence for Japan.

While there are certain elements within the Japanese culture which encourage conformity, I always find the claims that people in other countries would react differently risible.

In most places, most people would "continue as usual" until it hits them that they personally are affected and that no one else will help them if they don't help themselves.

There are differences and nuances, but 20th century global culture encourages normativity and conformity everywhere. Before the TV and the radio, we would probably have faced a larger number of local rebellions.

I was filled with pain and rage about Iraq for years (although I am not Iraqi), not understanding why the US public did not care at all. Then I realized deeply in my guts that many sectors of the US economy profited by continuous wars.

The elections of Bushie no. II were a bit more puzzling, but ultimately irrelevant, as Obama showed us.

Now, long after I've given up on the US public, suddenly things are stirring...But people had to suffer personally after 2008. They didn't care that the 1990s and 2000s were crappy for some of us (no, especially outside of the triad not that many boats got floated).

No doubt there will be a reaction in Japan as well.
Unfortunately, for many people the best single reaction right now would be to leave and not to wait. This is even bigger than the usual economic and political mess we have to live in.

Personally, I am learning more and more about mono no aware through this crisis -- and it's not a cliche for me.

The reason for all this anger may be in the fact that we ar all more like then unlike, in begin and mind.
I call it The Whipp, the mentality that is the main force to day, a mentality forged by The Whipp.

Regarding Fukushima it was only to pay atention to whats actualy messured(that tel us whats going in, like the meltouts early on, its plain physics) and the info relized, but stil its goverment that is stunningly incompetent and have absolutly done about everything wrong, from the first days, to this day.

No, the future looks grim, because the real number and range is stil downplayed and the mapings and the lack of credilblity regarding Peoples health is downright criminal.
People must be relocated, and thats done on the basis of maping, to clear out the hottspots and also know that there are hughe local variations in radiation, but needs maping.
What is the matter and the cause of Doctores treason against the comon people of Japan, i dont know.
But thats stunning, infact more alarming than the criminals inside TEPCO and the Japanes gov.
I am stunned.

Life have a tale and that is the litle known Fact, that the biggest obstacles in our lifes, is placed there, by non other than by ower own selfs, and nobody else.
Ones you realise that, you are free.
Its not Their Land nor to any Finnace conglomerate(TEPCO), its the land of the Japanes people, and nobody else, all you have to do is to take it back.

I'm really happy about this development!

After all, I don't see much difference in Japan or Germany. If I talk with people in Germany about Fukushima and the ongoing desaster, hardly anybody is aware of the current situation. Most people have already forgotten there's an ongoing crisis, radiations still is released every day, people still live in regions they should not live in and so on.

People tend to "forget" things that don't affect their daily lives, until they are either personally involved or they get reports of other people, made in a very personal manner so they can identify with them. Unfortunately that's how it works...
So we all need urgently voices coming out of Japan, sharing their daily struggles, pains, fears, worries to be able to empathize with them.

Japanese people have to understand that this is not an issue of interest for Japan alone - every government in the world would more or less behave like the japanese government - they already proved this after Chernobyl.

Obviously we need - and that's the point where it's getting really disgusting and horrible - we need the voices of affected people to be able to get rid of a technology that is able to ruin large areas for a very, very long time.

It's a shame that human kind always needs so many victims before we react!

What if TEPCO, the government and their miscellaneous lackeys continue to ignore/downplay scientific fact, accuse concerned citizens of hysteria, send uninformed, undocumented workers to their deaths, and spread radiated dirt, food, sludge, water, ashes and mutant rose clippings all over Japan in some mass act of happy-thinking to prove to the world that everything is hunky-dory, because your trusty government says so...

What if the spent fuel pool on reactor four collapses due to structural damage as some scientists are concerned about? What if this situation develops to the point where it's not just Fukushima and a couple of other prefectures affected, but all of central Japan? What if the radiation throughout Japan accumulates to the point where people can no longer deny its existence and must either flee or knowingly accept an early, miserable, cancer-ridden death?

Catastrophes typically develop from a series of seemingly small mistakes that snowball into something far worse, and every day since 3/11, more and more facts seem to leak out suggesting that this situation is far, far from contained.

It seems to me that every nation on this planet should be sending troops/volunteers/well-paid heros lead by honest nuclear scientists to stop this thing no matter what. Chernobyl was only contained by admitting that there was a serious problem and throwing everything possible at the situation to shut it down and save the day, regardless of cost. I'm guessing the Soviets understood that the cost of inaction would have been infinitely worse.

I ask you, what if this situation spirals out of control to the point where radiation is so bad throughout the country that people can't even go into undamaged reactors elsewhere in Japan to maintain them anymore... What happens then?

Look, I'm just some American housewife watching this disaster unfold from Northern California. As the cesium levels in our milk begin creeping upward again (which, of course, is nothing compare to what the people of Japan have to endure) I am concerned about the world I brought my daughters into. Will they even have a future worth living?

What frustrates me most is that no one seems to care, no one is watching/rising up/paying attention/admitting the truth/pitching in to help other than a few heroic fringe bloggers out there sacrificing time, money and resources for no particular reward other than perhaps a sense of duty to share the truth with anyone willing to listen. Everyone around me is understandably wrapped up in their normal, everyday lives. If I post Fukushima links on Facebook, I'm seen as a depressing, alarmist freak. I suppose more people are watching the impending collapse of the western financial system, long overdue, but the real disaster is in Japan. The mainstream media here in the US doesn't cover it, except for the fluffy, six-month-anniversary, it's-all-under-control piece. Perhaps because Japan is such a technologically advanced country, everyone assumes all is well, how could it not be?

Yet Fukushima is by far the biggest, most disturbing, life-threatening, slow-moving train wreck of a disaster to ever hit planet earth as long as humans have recorded history, with the potential to morph into an extinction event. Yes, extinction, like the dinosaurs.

For if we do nothing or drag our feet or let the thing fester, pretending all is well, it may just decay to the point where it can't be contained, and then all of humanity will be slowly poisoned, and our species may not survive. You cannot defy physics. We are, after all, living creatures, bound by nature.

The earth doesn't care what happens to us... the boars, the bugs, some plants and who knows what else will adapt. But homo sapiens, I'm afraid, may not fare so well.

Perhaps it will be the Japanese mothers, crying out for their children, that shed light on the need to find a solution that saves us all.

I see some really hurtful and offbase things flung at the Japanese people as a whole. I don't see the problem of being sheep or complacent while the government acts in ways that are not in the best interest of the people to be unique to Japan. This is a disease I see in equal amounts in the US. People act like sheep and they harass or look down on anyone questioning the status quo.

One person has little power against these huge corporations and complicit government doing crazy things. I watched Bush cheerlead the unraveling of the US and was helpless to do much beyond complaining about it. There are people in Japan trying to do something. Groups working to find ways around the govt. food mess, moving kids to other locations, trying to shut down power plants by local referendum or any loophole they can find.

Nothing happens until the angry people hits a critical mass. That is what has to happen in the US, that is what has to happen in Japan. Sadly, Japan's fight comes with much higher stakes of health and life. We are all fighting different versions of the same beast.

I THINK YOU ASK 'WHAT IF' BUT WHAT YOU CONJECTURE IS ACTUALLY CLOSER TO THE TRUTH AND THE DAY TO DAY FINDINGS.
THE TROUBLE IS THAT IF JAPAN ADMITTED THE TRUTH TODAY, JAPAN WOULD BE FINISHED EVEN SOONER THAN IS PLAYING OUT NATURALLY. OF COURSE THE WORLDS NO.3 ECONOMY DOESNT SIMPLY IMPLODE BY ITSELF. JAPAN IS TOO IMPORTANT AND WOULD SOON DRAG DOWN THE OTHERS INTO A GLOBAL HYPERINFLATIONARY(?)/DEFLATIONARY DEPRESSION. THEY ARE SIMPLY TRYING TO KEEP AIR IN THE BALLOON FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, IMHO. The situation is more or less as you described it. The only answer I can give you is that people who are knowingly downplaying the Fukushima crisis and consequences of radiation exposure for humans are against life itself.

Don't blame yourself because you have given life to your children. It is clear by your comments that you stand for life and that you defend it. Those of us who do must find ways to connect and to fight to preserve it; otherwise, we will all perish, whether in a slow, grinding way, or in more spectacular, explosive moments.

From experience, I can tell you that sometimes connecting with others is possible and easy, but at other times, even your closest friends and family prefer to keep their eyes shut. You have to live through those times without becoming utterly desperate. Be brave.

I live in the U.S. but we are the same 'sheeple' regarding this problem. Despite numerous reports of radiation from Fukushima being carried by the jet stream and falling on large portions of Canada and the U.S. contaminating our water and soil, and the radiation discharged into the Pacific being carried by the Kuroshio (Black Current) straight to Alaska and down along the West Coast of Canada and the U.S., most Americans remain totally ignorant of this problem and the U.S. gov't has not taken any proactive steps to safeguard the population from possible exposure to radiation. The mainstream media here have been ignoring it, and w/o media attention there will be no public concern. Right after the accident the U.S. EPA set up monitoring stations across the U.S. for a few months, but they have since ceased monitoring despite continued need for it. One would think that some environmental activist organization would take the initiative and organize monitoring efforts, but so far that is not happening.

Woe, woe, says Finnish troll and the King James Bible, for historically the Japanese were 84%-96% Shinto and Buddhist and now between 64% and 80% of Japanese describe themselves as atheists, agnostics, or non-believers.

The King James Bible clearly states that those who do not accept Jesus as their saviour will burn in eternal hellfire. You are just picking and choosing from the KJ Bible, which you insist is the Word of God. That bible does clearly state you have to accept Jesus as your saviour in order to go to heaven. You can be awesome wicked all your life, until just before your death, and if you repent and accept Jesus as your saviour at that moment, you will go to heaven. Too bad for the Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Shinto,...etc. humanitarian who devoted his/her life to good works--KJ Bible clearly states they are going to hell.

The Finnish troll does not realize that the Bible was written in Greek by Aramaic-speakers (many of whose descendants are Palestinians and Lebanese on whose heads DU shells rained in the last decade, to remain with our nuclear topic).

If you know Greek (as I do), you realize that KJ has a lot of mistakes and blunders. KJ, as Shakespearish as it sounds, is the house built on sand. A Finn should quote Swedish versions anyway, no Finns spoke or read English when KJ was written.

I would rather hear the Finn sing the Kalevala, is he indeed is a Finn. But "ei toista tullutkana, ei ollut osoajata."

If you can't recite the Kalevala, even Finnish history from the 1690s (after the famines which killed 1/3 of their population) offers more relevant information on how to live through this crisis than the abstract rants.

Now, can we go back to talking about actual Japanese children who are suffering instead of cultivating cobbled-together Breivikiana?

Good point. Although at first glance I thought, "Why would Catholics go to hell? They believe in Jesus." You are right though that they would be damned as per the KJ Babble because there is no mention of pope or Vatican nor of religious orders affiliated(like Jesuits!) with the aforementioned. So too, as per KJ Babble, is damnable the veneration of saints and Mary. I guess all good Roman Catholics are just deluding themselves into thinking they can get out of being roasted for an eternity just because they believe in Jesus. BTW, I read Hebrew too, in addition to Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Greek (Koine of the Hellenistic period in addition to Dhimotiki) and a couple more European languages, so the news that the OT was in Hebrew is no news at all.

But Hebrew is not what Jesus spoke, he spoke and thought in Aramaic. Syriac, used by eastern Christians in liturgical service, is the closest that we are to his actual speech.

The point is that Yehoshua ("Jesus") purportedly so beloved by Protestant fundies in the US and elsewhere was a dark ragged homeless Semite with not a drop of Norse blood.
