NY Chefs Learn about Japanese Cuisine, and CM by the Japanese Government Promoting Food in East Japan

This gotta be the scheme hatched by the Japanese government, to have a sympathetic French chef conduct a workshop in New York.

The Japanese people, like many Asians and for that matter Europeans (and New Yorkers themselves), seem to think everything revolves around New York when it comes to anything American.

Of all things, the workshop was about how to prepare raw fish for sushi...

Anyway, here's NHK World (1/27/2012):

NY chefs learn about Japanese cuisine

Chefs at high-end restaurants in New York have taken part in a workshop to learn about traditional Japanese cuisine.

New York-based French chef Daniel Boulud organized the workshop. He led a group of chefs last July to cook meals for survivors in the tsunami-ravaged city of Kamaishi.

About 40 chefs took part in Thursday's workshop.
A sushi chef explained traditional ways to prepare raw fish.

Boulud said Japan is striving to restore trust in food safety, and he believes that Japanese ingredients are safe.

New York City has more than 1,400 Japanese restaurants. Some of these businesses were affected by the safety concerns about Japanese food after the disaster.

NHK World has a video of the news at the link. Watching the video, it was indeed the scheme hatched by the Japanese government.

Here's another video promoting produce from disaster-affected East Japan (Kanto, Tohoku), targeting the Japanese using a popular group TOKIO. Translated and captioned by Tokyo Brown Tabby who did it probably in rage (as Tabby tries to pick safe food):

(From TBT's Youtube description; emphasis is mine)

This TV commercial clip (15 seconds) and its longer full version are sponsored by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and have been on-air intermittently since early June, 2011. (A month after that, the problem of contaminated beef started to emerge).

The full 30-second version can be viewed here: http://syokuryo.jp/news-commercial/2011/06/tvcm-1.html

According to the official webpage for this CM campaign, the food that appear in the full 30-second version is as follows: rice ball using rice from Miyagi, asparagus from Fukushima, cucumber from Fukushima with "miso" from Miyagi, tomato from Ibaraki, apple from Aomori, watermelon from Gunma, milk from Iwate, peach from Yamanashi, BBQ using beef from Yamagata and onion from Chiba, and raw skipjack "sashimi" from Chiba.

These 5 men are a popular idol group called TOKIO.

The list of food items used reads like a horror story for those who closely follow the radioactivity measurement results by the prefectural governments.

MAFF what a laff.. Should be known as MAFFIa because they work in the same way. None of that food would enter my house.

We are witnessing genocide in slow motion. Spread this around please. There is so much visual proof in this video no one can hide it.

P.S. These five idiots should go back to Fukushima and continue with their farming episode.

Taro Yamamoto is the only celebrity that is willing to sacrifice his career for the country. These five idiots could care less though. I guess it is in their contracts and the refuse to understand science.

Horror story indeed. Makes me SICK!

We avoid all of those food items. Our US military commissary however is pushing them. We can only purchase Japanese apples, there is an embargo on importing US apples. No big deal though, think we are the only ones who care, most Americans are buying them up!

I wonder what is "humane" about this. Why don't they start eating more veggies, instead of fish, fish, fish. Oh yeah, and whales. The hell with "tradition" or whatever.

Good news travels fast... Bad news travels faster. I doubt any sane adult in Japan is unaware that food is adulterated. It must be very stressful to eat and feed food to your family that has suspected invisible poisons. Water, air, and food... All contaminated from tip to tip in the archipelago. My sympathies to the innocent victims. If possible buy imported food, get filtration for your home (air and water). The radiation sickness in Japan will mirror the Black Plague of the middle ages. Seek out knowledge to help you survive if you are unable to emigrate.

People like those in this video will be remembered in history for their roles in deceiving the public of Japan.

I agree with Chibaguy, Taro Yamamoto is a TRUE Japanese hero willing to put his career and life on the line. If only other celebrities would follow his example. What about Beat Takeshi, Ken Watanabe and other big name celebrities known throughout the world? Why do these men not put their careers on the line? Do they have too much at stake and protecting their loved ones? It is truly sad because Japan (and the world) needs more heroes now than ever.

Chibaguy, any update on you getting out of Tokyo or Japan atleast? I have many relatives in Chiba and I am horrified at the thought of them still being their in these conditions but there is little I can do.

What makes the NYC food thing worse is that the US is doing nothing to monitor fish out of the Pacific at all. They declared this a non-issue in March 2011 and refuse to budge. It is all just a game to avoid having to do anything like actual monitoring. There is also the worry of having Alaska fishing lose business if too many people start to worry about safety. There is no contamination if you never do tests. Meanwhile the Pacific testing that has been done showed radiation hit Russian shores 1 month after the disaster and was over half way across the pacific by Sept 2011 in places. Fish species that migrate long distances are showing up with cesium in Japan. Look at the migration patterns. It isn't just fish imports from Japan to worry about. The US and Canada don't give a rip about food safety.

I really feel for people trying to buy groceries in Japan. It has to be an insane hassle just to do a basic daily task of life. There are groups like OK Food pointing out safe options and stores like Aeon testing products before stocking them.

In the US I simply gave up on eating seafood all together. I rarely find Atlantic seafood in our stores in the Midwest. Everything is Pacific and untested.

I didn't know there was anything wrong with Aomori apples. Aomori is pretty far away from Fukushima at the northern tip of the island. I ate Aomori apples occasionally last year. Most Japanese always peel the skin and throw it away. I'd be curious to know what the story is on Aomori apples.

As far as I know, Beat Takeshi (or Takeshi Kitano) is pro-nuke, and Ken Watanabe is elated to having given a speech at Davos. Go figure.

Thanks for the list of what NOT to eat as prepped by these young whores who are simply working for their manager pimps-like nearly ALL the dross 'talents' in Japan. Good looking talentless muppets unleashed by the most powerful media machine in the world. This is collective madness not seen since Hitler's boys brigades and Goebals. Still the message is clear. Money still rules the roost in Japan. People will whore themselves for it...the oldest profession in the world.
What price to pay when they realize they prostituted their souls for gain whilst the children get thyroid lumps and cancer.
Apart from Murakami (the writer) not many have made a stand.
Pathetic nation of jobsworths!
