500 Used Cars to Be Shipped from Nagoya Port Have Exceeded Radiation Limit Since August Last Year

That's when they started testing, and 500 used cars from Nagoya Port alone.

Japanese used cars are popular in Russia, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Despite the nuclear accident, the number of exported used cars in 2011 increased slightly over 2010 to 857,779 cars according to the Used Car Export Industry News, with Russia at the top with over 110K followed by the United Arab Emirates.

Kyodo News (2/25/2012):

Nagoya Port Authority disclosed on February 25 that 500 used cars were found with radiation levels at or exceeding 0.3 microsievert/hour, the standard set by the [used car] industry from August last year to January this year, and that the cars were returned to the shippers.

 国内外へ輸送される予定だった。同組合は、荷主に返した車のその後の流通状況を確認していない。

The used cars were to be exported outside Japan or to be transported to different parts of Japan. Nagoya Port Authority does not keep track of the cars returned to the shippers.

According to Nagoya Port Authority, 0.3 microsievert/hour standard was set by the Japan Harbor Transportation Association and All Japan Dockworkers' Union (JDU) to secure the safety of the dockworkers. The radiation testing has been done at ports in Japan since August last year.

Isn't that nice that 0.3 microsievert/hour is not for the safety of the buyers of the cars but for the dockworkers handling the cars and loading them?

It is also nice to know that the radiation levels of the used cars are measured ONLY IF the cars are transported from a port by ships. There is no testing at all if used cars are transported by land within Japan.

The earliest news I caught on this blog of radioactive used cars is from NHK News on April 24, 2011 when Russian authorities in the port of Nakhodka in Siberian Russia found 2 used cars emitting high radiation. The cars came from Niigata Port on April 16, and they were originally from Fukushima Prefecture.

Before the NHK news, there were "rumors" that were officially dismissed. One of the rumors on blogs and tweets that I heard was almost exactly what got finally reported by NHK, that there were many used cars exported from Japan after March 11, 2011 accident that are emitting very high radiation.

At the end of march 2011 japanese authorities complained of " unfair trade war by the means of rumors " on japanese products like thread (from Osaka ) and... green tea that used to sell very well to wealthy chinese.
And cars to Russia, yes.

I remember a few years ago the japanese government banned meat from the usa based on rumours that it had BSE, now the tables have turned and they are whining, fuck the jap government.

This sounds about right.

The military base we are associated with typically has very few used cars available in the late winter early spring months due to rotation schedules of military members being low at this time.

However this season we have seen 50-75% more cars than normal and they are being sold primarily by "dealers." None of these cars are being tested and the base has no intention of getting involved.

We have tried to warn newcomers looking for car, but we get brushed aside. :( The prevailing attitude is that 'Japan' would never allow radioactive cars to be sold....

Just glad we will soon be leaving!

@anon at 11:51PM, in case you missed the numerous requests from me before, please spell out "jap" into "japanese".

and my friends and family have called me crazy for outright banning of ANYTHING from Japan in our life. I will NEVER knowingly purchase anything from Japan again despite it being the country of my heritage. This was and still remains a very painful and point for me and has almost made me nuts but it is what it is.

I live by this since 3.11:

Made in Japan = ☢

So I say FUCK the Japan economy and the government. If the country collapses so be it. If the global economy collapses (and it will) as a result, so be it. This is what we have come due to our greed and stupidity.

Regardless of your opinion, the use of "Jap" is not only racist, it shows a distinct lack of compassion. This term does not belong in social discourse.

Anonymous said...

Gotta protect the Japanese dock workers ... who cares about any dumb foreigner who buys the car!

Don't you love how dock workers get preferential treatment over women and children in Fukushima?

What a lovely society.

arevamirpal::laprimavera said...

It's a lovely society in Fukushima that many say keep these women and children inside Fukushima - family ties, land, job, home loans, what have you. Those who could and would had already escaped, with or without money.

Nothing after the explosions can be considered safe. The reaction from the government ensured this. They could have immediately controlled this using Speedi but they did not because of .......... Fill in the blank with whatever word you feel is applicable.

I do not want the economy to collaspe bunif that is what it takes then so be it.

As for the person that keeps using the derogatory term "japs," give it a rest and understand that WWII is over. If you are still fighting in the caves of Okinawa I wl give you a license to go see someone.

Its Interesting how japanese like to call foreigners Gaijin all the time , even to my face , which i consider very fucking rude and racist... But they themselves hate the word jap.... Do unto others as they say..

no6ody said...

Caveat emptor --> 'let the buyer beware.' News like this is going to hurt the Japanese economy in the long run, but I suppose all businesses are run with very short-term thinking these days.

Congrats, arevamirpal::laprimavera! You have attracted semi-competent trolls, which I interpret as a sign that you are making TPTB uncomfortable.

It was saddening to watch the Symposium in Willamette when Yoko Ikeada made her presentation as a resident of Fukushima.

The questions/comments by people in the audience highlighted both the despair and importance of coming to terms with the reality of the situation.

I've been called gaijin more times than I care to count. Once a young Japanese child out with his parents pointed at me and screamed "gaijin!", as if he had seen a flaming yurei.

Last month in America a truck load of tissue holders headed for Bed, Bath and Beyond set off a patrol car scanner just driving by it and the shipment and all of those already delivered had to be recalled and sent back to Japan. I am sorry I don't have a link for it and I don't remember the exposure rate but I think it would be wise of the Japanese to focus on products they can safely export like computer graphics but not exponents. They can do telecommunications work like India or anything that is service related but does not require a physical component. Engineering, architecture and even fashion design can all be done from a desk. It's certainly not the end of the world for Japan. It's just an opportunity to re-invent themselves.

arevamirpal::laprimavera said...

Ms. Brackett, if you at least had googled what you wrote before you posted and told the Japanese how to run their industries, it would have been better.

It didn't set off a patrol car scanner just by driving by. It was at a routine, inspection station.

It was not from Japan, it was from India.

It was cobalt-60 strayed into a metal load smelted in India.

Now do you have suggestions for Indians?

I bet Karen is still unemployed, but she can make some extra dough by offering a service whereby she charges consultation fees to the Japanese for her imagined American expertise.

There are lots of articles you can get Google to spit out about radioactive commercial grade steel originating in the U.S. being sold as scrap to China and India where it is fashion into cutlery and other such things only to be reimported back into the U.S.. If I am not mistaken, Texas sold a big-ass load of such contaminated steel to China...

Lets face it.
Importing goods from Japan is a new paradigm now after 3.11. Many products are contaminated to be purchase for.

About Karen Sherry Brackett post, I do understand the frustration created by to have to try to reinvent yourself.
Loooking it for the bright side, we all after 3.11 had a life swiftpoint and that is always good.

Nice I also share with you something hope this helpful for you my friends The best way of making sure that you are not overpaying for the car is to use automotive websites like KBB.com (Kelley Blue Book) to get a good idea of what it’s currently worth. Finding out the true value of the car can also act as a basis for further negotiation, especially if you are leveraging problems with the car or flaws to the vehicle as a means for additional discounts from the original price. Check it out thanks.
