Ministry of Agriculture Enlists "Miss Campus" from 9 Universities to Be "Eat and Support East Japan" Ambassadors

(UPDATE 2/17/2012: Enjoy the video, too.)

===============================

The Japanese government is going to make these young women eat food from the nuclear-disaster affected Tohoku and Kanto to support the recovery.

This is simply beyond my comprehension. Some on Twitter call it "student mobilization", just like during the World War II; the government knowingly putting young people in danger so they can remain in their positions a while longer.

From Sankei Photo News (2/15/2012):

ミスキャンパスが震災復興の応援大使  農水省

"Miss Campus" to become "ambassadors" to support the disaster recovery, says Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

To support the agriculture, forestry sand fisheries industries in the disaster-affected areas, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries appointed 9 "Miss Campus" (beauty queens) on 9 campuses including Aoyama Gakuin University and Gakushuin University as "Eat and Support student ambassadors" on February 15. The nine young women will participate in activities not only for the disaster recovery but also for improving the food self-sufficiency rate.

In the swearing-in ceremony at the Ministry in Kasumigaseki, Tokyo, Minister Michihiko Kano said to the students, "I would like you to play an active part with keen interest in food. I am looking forward to your effort to appeal the charm of domestically grown agricultural, forest and fishery products to the younger generation, as they are the key to improving the food self-sufficiency."

Upon being sworn in, each member spoke of their plans. Miss Seikei University (age 20) said, "I will eat food items from east Japan heartily". Miss Rikkyo Women's College (age 22) said enthusiastically, "I will come up with one desert a week using fruits from Tohoku, and eat it." (Photograph of "Miss Campus" members with Minister Kano, February 15 afternoon)

"Charm" of domestic produce? You mean radionuclides are a charm?

Agricultural products like rice and vegetables from Tohoku and Kanto are contaminated with radioactive materials in varying degrees. You don't want to eat fish caught off the coast of Tohoku and Kanto if you don't want to eat cesium and strontium (and God knows what else). Fruits from Tohoku are particularly bad, with kiwis, blueberries regularly exceeding the provisional safety limit (500 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium). Peaches, apples, persimmons have all been found with radioactive cesium. Mushrooms are routinely found with radioactive cesium easily exceeding the safety limit.

I wonder what the Ministry offered these women in return. As Haruki Madarame famously said, "It's about money". If not money, it should still be something of value, enough to offset the potential health risk of promoting recovery by eating Tohoku and Kanto produce.

From the Ministry's webpage, it seems a photo magazine called B.L.T. is involved in the project. Maybe these young women get to pose for the magazine, and that will be the reward for them...

I teach at Aoyama Gakuin University, and am embarrassed that one of our air-headed students is campaigning to encourage other Japanese people to suicide with her. You're right about it being for money. She's doing it for herself, and does not represent the student body or the faculty.

Shame on her and the other eight twits. The only way these idiots are "beauty queens" is via their pathological concept of suicidal death as "bi"「美。」

Beautiful girls with no brains who will do as they are programmed. I feel great shame and embarrassment at how stupid many Japanese are but this is natural selection at play right before our eyes.

If people are so easily fooled and will consume food from these regions to "support" the affected areas then they will get what comes to them. It is sad but it is what it is.

Those who are doing the encouraging though deserve a long and torturous death IMO. There can be no mercy for the deceivers.

Nice visuals kintaman, but I think the most we can do here in the comments is lambaste pro-nuke shills. Every little bit helps.

@anon 10:26,

We can do more especially those of us still trapped here. The station I use daily now has a poster of three young ladies advertising skiing in Fukushima. I just sit here and tell these people that they are advertising slow suicide. Whether they get it or not is there problem. One percent will agree about this while maybe 10 percent will acknowledge a problem. The rest are just zombies and have erased this from their collective memories.

Good link to Miss Atom. Thank you.

Aoyama Gakuin, Chibaguy, I guess we're witnessing the natural selection at work.

One of the people I follow on Twitter said his small daughter was found with radioactive cesium in her body and the amount increased from the previous test he's done. He was particularly careful about wearing masks, vegetables from the western Japan, and homemade lunch at the kindergarten. He said the only thing he didn't quite pay attention to was eating out.

Hate to think what happens if you continue to eat without care, as these young women are going to do.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Sorry, but this is just incredible. My daughter who is relatively proficient in Japanese (just passed her Level 3 JPLT), was seriously considering Tokyo Univ. prior to 3/11. Now she is seeing all of this and no way!

I really do sometimes wonder what is wrong with me when I am confronted with so many 'zombies' as Chibaguy puts it.

Chibaguy, any progress in getting out of there? We leave in 43 days and counting. Lord help us all!

laprimavera - " He said the only thing he didn't quite pay attention to was eating out. "

That is one thing we gave up immediately, and we see so many people indiscriminately still doing! My husband and I feel that most of the contaminated food will go to restaurants because no one will be checking there. But on the other hand a lot of people aren't checking any of their food....

@Chibaguy, got it.

I could probably connect you with the person who had his daughter tested. He is a college professor (I think) and has connections with the testing labs in Tokyo.

@ex skf,

I am sorry as I cannot copy and paste from my phone your handle. If you know someone that will test here locally, please let me know. I would be more than grateful. We take all of the precautions needed but we need to know.

I am a "teacher" at Gakushuin "University" and can see why it was chosen to dump the radioactive food propaganda onto the dumb public: Gakushuin university has close ties with the Japanese royal family, and if they can eat radioactive waste so can their students. I know from many years teaching at that school what an arrogant attitude the administration has for students and teachers alike, we work without benefits or pension or yearly job security. The British fellow in charge of the foreign language dept. is the most obsequious arrogant little twit you could ever come across. I hope he gets to eat up some radioactive junk too! Yum!

Seriously, where can I buy one of those geiger counters here in Japan? Yodobashi, I wish!

Good luck, Chibaguy and farfromhome!

Check out http://www.radiation-watch.org/ Affordable, easy to use, works with an iPhone. Doesn't test food, you need a sophisticated machine for that, but good for doing a quick check around/outside your home, office, etc.

@helena,

That was our first consideration and maybe ex skf can opine. Both roads seem to lead to sacrificing my wife's relatives. If we cannot pay it off it goes directly to the next of kin. Maybe this is why that have to register the "family tree.". Same thing happens when one commits suicide by train which is annoying.

Simply and saddly unbelievable!!
What a lack of respect for human lives needles to say how chauvinistic...
Thank you for sharing. Even though I'm nowhere near Japan but in South America, we will continue sparking the debate so that this kind of actions do not serve as example anywhere in the world - Shame on those involved in any way...really

HOLY IDIOCY!! - Why in the world would ANYONE do something as stupid as eating contaminants? What would it take to make these air-headed people understand, "POISON"? Do we have to put 'Mr. Yuk' stickers on things as I did for my toddlers to make them understand? - Talk about vapid ideas...

God I miss the lovely women of Japan. If I had a basement these beauties would be much better off there but my tent will have to do. The nearest nuclear plant is 100 miles away but we have large highways in the event of social unrest to move the tanks quickly from here to there or for folks like me to high tail it as far as necessary. They will love to learn my tent. I can cook and clean very well, I have a great personality and a handsome nose.

This is such a great waste of youth and beauty. The War is over and self Sacrifice for ones Nation is over. After 1945 and two Atomic Bombs, you would think the youth of today would know how the People after these attacks suffered from Radiation sickness. You "Miss Campus" Think before you act, once you commit yourself to this death, will you ever have children or live to an old age?

These hot women are beautiful but, not too smart! Evidently, they didn't study about the effects of radiation poisoning in school! They probably spent way too much time preening themselves in the mirror!

Let's face it, Governments are scum. Scum you NEVER believe or trust. Why? It's always about the money, power, and manipulation it does to citizens.

Add these women to the future death toll caused by Fuckashima!

Sorry. They will learn to love my tent.

This takes the exploitation of women to an entirely new level.

The whole Miss University thing makes me uncomfortable. Seems like a holdover from the 50s. Judging women sheerly on their looks. And, once selected, they will be expected to shill for their sponsors. A form of legal prostitution?

Nonetheless, they are getting a real world education, which I hope they take to heart and realize how they are exploited. Would be thrilling if they declined the honor of being Miss Atoms and refused to promote the Eat East Japan. Quite a sexist title, too.

Please don't hurt those woman. They are beautiful. There are better ways to make money than throw it all away.

no really? i am in united states and we are worried here about water and air contamination reaching at the distance we do have in between. and im praying to God that u don't have any more quakes as it stands. And i can promise you... i wish the girls could read this. everyone of them is very beautiful....and im sure growing up in Japan each one of them i bet have high academic scores. that if you came to U.S. or even to Texas here. U could go to Any college you probably want. And not a one would ever want you to coax you to or bribe you to eat radioactive contaminated food. You will destroy all the beauty you have in just a few years. trying to be a test dummy. Texas has a lot of the most beautiful woman in the U.S. in it. And I would love to see you girls here. As beautiful as you all are. And have longer to live and still have hair to shampoo and brush. then to have a wig and may not be able to see or have enough strength to put your wigs on in a few years. We i promise would love to have you all living and well here in The great state of Texas. Please....!!!! Use your mind....or a Publication for money. Not by eating radioactive food. johnrossdezigns @ gmail.com

You need to get past the fact that these are "hot, Beautiful" women. They are young adults, human beings in the prime of their lives, who are being sacrificed so the gov't. can make some imagined point.
I would hope you would be just as upset if they were 40 Yr. old housewives, or middle aged men. Compassion extends to all who are being forced to harm themselves for the lies of the gov't. Open your abode to all who need rescuing because it is the right thing to do, not for some base need of your own...

Thanks for the link! Will have a look at it.

Sometimes we need what we call 'emergency food' i.e. fast food in a pinch, so it is always nice to have more input about the lesser of the evils.
