#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: PLUTONIUM DETECTED in Soil

Yomiuri Shinbun (in Japanese; 12:04AM JST 3/29/2011):

TEPCO held a press conference late at night on March 28, and disclosed that plutonium was detected in the soil sampled on March 21 and 22 in Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant.

Plutonium was not derived from the past open air nuclear weapons tests, and it was highly likely that it was released in the current accident, said TEPCO.

TEPCO assured that the level of plutonium [was low and] would not affect human bodies.

More from Asahi:

Plutonium-238, -239, -240 were detected.

Half life:

Plutonium-238: 87.7 years

Plutonium-239: 24,200 years

Plutonium-240: 6.563 years
