Just In: TEPCO Has Removed One Fuel Assembly from Reactor 4 Spent Fuel Pool at #Fukushima I Nuke Plant

Headline only at Kyodo News (2012/07/18 12:13):

速報:東京電力は、福島第1原発4号機の燃料プールから未使用の燃料集合体1体を試験的に取り出した。

TEPCO removed one unused fuel assembly from the Spent Fuel Pool at Reactor 4 at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, as a test.

Aerial photo at NHK, with workers in white suits. It almost looks like a religious ceremony of some sort.

For some reason the thumbnails expand to thumbnails. Is this as intended?

Any word on where these undamaged fuel elements will be stored? I know they could just spread them out on the ground around Fukushima and nobody would notice and even fewer would care but I'd hope they have a secure facility to move them to.

Photos are from screenshots of their pages. Sorry.

Anon at 9:39AM, the unused fuel assemblies taken out from SFP4 will go to the Common Pool for temporary storage. They are preparing dry cask storage for the fuel assemblies that have been in the Common Pool long enough (longer than 2, 3 years, most likely older than 5 years), to make room for the unused and spent fuel assemblies to be removed from SFP4 in the future.

Probably they plan to store the unused fuel assemblies and some time later transfer them to Kashiwazaki-Kariwa for usage.

Noooo
Just can't really imagine any fuel sitting in pools drenched in seawater ,whether used or unused, could possibly be undamaged.

Of course you are right.
But to be honest, I could imagine Tepco using the fuel if the damage is only "minor". This once was Tepco tradition.
