Simulation Map of Cesium-137 Deposition Across the Pacific by CEREA Shows Contamination in US Greater Than That of Western Japan

France's CEREA has the simulation map of ground deposition of cesium-137 from the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant accident on its "Fukushima" page. It not only shows Japan but also the entire northern Pacific Rim, from Russian Siberia to Alaska to the West Coast of the US to the entire US.

According to the map, the US, particularly the West Coast and particularly California, may be more contaminated with radioactive cesium than the western half of Japan or Hokkaido. It looks more contaminated than South Korea or China. Canada doesn't look too well either, particularly along the border with US on the western half.

From CEREA's Fukushima page:

Atmospheric dispersion of radionuclides from the Fukushima-Daichii nuclear power plant

CEREA, joint laboratory École des Ponts ParisTech and EdF R&D
Victor Winiarek, Marc Bocquet, Yelva Roustan, Camille Birman, Pierre Tran

Map of ground deposition of caesium-137 for the Fukushima-Daichii accident.

The simulation was performed with a specific version of the numerical atmospheric chemistry and transport model Polyphemus/Polair3D. The parametrisations used for the transport and physical removal of the radionuclides are described in [1,2,3,4].

The magnitude of the deposition field is uncertain and the simulated values of deposited radionuclides could be significantly different from the actual deposition. In particular, the source term remains uncertain. Therefore, these results should be seen as preliminary and they are likely to be revised as new information become available to better constrain the source term and when radionuclides data can be used to evaluate the model simulation results.

The page also has the animated simulation of cesium-137 dispersion from March 11 to April 6, 2011. If the Japanese think they are the only ones who have the radiation and radioactive fallout from the accident, they are very much mistaken, if the simulation is accurate. (Meteorological institutes and bureaus in Austria, Germany, and Norway all had similar simulation maps.)

Radioactive materials spewed out of Fukushima I Nuke Plant went up and away on the jet stream, reaching the other side of the Pacific. When the fallout from explosions (March 14, 15) reached the US West Coast, it came with an unusually heavy rainfall in California.

CEREA's description of the animation (if the animation doesn't work, or if you want to see the bigger one, go to CEREA's page):

Movie of the Fukushima-Daichii activity in the air (caesium-137, ground level)

The simulation was performed with a specific version of the numerical atmospheric chemistry and transport model Polyphemus/Polair3D. The parametrisations used for the transport and physical removal of the radionuclides are described in [1,2,3,4].

The magnitude of activity concentration field is uncertain and could be significantly different from the actual one. In particular, the source term remains uncertain. Therefore, these results should be seen as preliminary and they are likely to be revised as new information become available to better constrain the source term and when radionuclides data can be used to evaluate the model simulation results.

US news censors info like this. US government is more concerned with its financial interests than its citizens. If this was on the 6 o=clock news, nuclear industry would be kaput. But Obama is Immelt's boy, so the bidness goes on until the planet is uninhabitable. Shame. Shame. Shame.

Anonymous said...

Obama also stopped the Yucca Mt. solution to spent fuel. It wasn't a great solution, but it was the one that justified building nuclear plants. We spent decades and billions, and Obama stopped it - in my opinion as a political payoff to Reid for delivering Nevada.

So all the spent fuel piling up waiting for a disaster to strike has Obama's name on it. He stopped that at the same time he claimed nuclear was a green alternative and sought to fund new projects. None of this is in the news. They refer to Yucca Mt.s cancelation in third person, passive terms - as if space aliens had done it.

Shame on the media. Shame on this president, this congress, and shame on those who put profits before all else, including Life itself.

Of course the US censors news. Anyone who believes anything coming from any corporate news source is seriously in denial about the true state of things. They don't owe us or anyone the truth about anything. Its not in thier interest to do so. The US is TOTALLY controlled by the corporations, and always has been. The citizens have no say and never did. It was and still is an illusion.
This country is and was founded as a CORPORATION by other corporations looking operate independently of the kings of England, France and Spain at that time. One that I know of is still in operation after more than 200 years.
To the powers that be this is just business as usual. As regular people all we can do is look out for ourselves as best as we can, cuz the corporate hoodlums don't care. In fact I wouldn't put it past them to see this event as a financial opportunity of some sort.

Anonymous said...

The corporate news have an endless supply of readers and repeaters ( the useful idiots) more than happy to sellout their people and nation for a dollar. When the house of cards crumbles they will inevitably say, "We were just doing our jobs". The American people seem to have accepted the strategy of running and hiding as a means of dealing with the corruption rather than the correct method of giving these bullies a bloody nose. It's the only language they understand, besides, you can only run so far.

TEPCO themselves iced that cake, seeking approval to build another reactor right after the meltdowns.

I lived in Las Vegas for eleven years and northern Nevada for three. The Yucca Mountain project was a boondogle from day one. The faults it was built on were only one of many problems. Nevadans fought it for years and it was a righteous fight!
The Feds have no business forcing a state to take waste from another state! Whatever state produces the waste should be responsible for the shit. It was dead before Obomba even came into office. So the political hay for that traitorous pos Reid was easily seen through by Nevadans!

From the California Department of Food and Agriculture:

2010-2011 Resource Directory:

California continues to set the pace for the rest of the nation as the country’s largest agricultural producer and exporter. In 2009, California’s farmers and ranchers exported more than 22 percent of the state’s agricultural production for that year. In dollar terms, California’s agricultural export statistics reveal that total exports were valued at $12.4 billion for 2009.

California remained the No. 1 state in cash farm receipts in 2009, with its $34.8 billion in revenue representing 12.3 percent of the U.S. total.

The state produces nearly half of U.S.-grown fruits, nuts and vegetables. Across the nation, U.S. consumers regularly purchase several crops produced solely in California.

Significantly, California is the only state in the nation to export the following commodities: 100 percent of the almonds, artichokes, dates, dried plums, figs, garlic, kiwifruit, olives, pistachios, raisins and walnuts.

A few of California’s agricultural exports experienced dramatic growth in 2009—exports of rice jumped by 59 percent to $877 million, making that commodity second to almonds as a top export crop.

Walnuts, pistachios, fresh tomatoes and spinach also enjoyed export gains over the prior year.

Top Export Destinations:

# Country US$(M) Leading Exports
1 Canada 2.557 Lettuce, Strawberries, Wine
2 EUnion-27 1.988 Almonds, Wine, Pistachios
3 Japan 1.119 Rice, Almonds, Wine
4 China/HK 985 Almonds, Pistachio, Walnuts
5 Mexico 551 Dairy, Tomatoes, Walnuts
6 South Korea 347 Oranges, Almonds, Walnuts
7 India 214 Almonds, Cotton, Pistachios
8 Arab Emirate 213 Almonds, Walnuts, Hay
9 Australia 202 Table Grapes, Rice, Walnuts
10 Taiwan 191 Rice,Grapes,Peach/Nectarines

(M) - Millions

Over 400 different crops are grown in California. Interestingly, California only possesses less than 4% of the total U.S. farms, but supplies the nation with the most agriculture products.

In 2009, 81,500 farms operated in California, less than 4 percent of the national total.

California is the leading dairy state in the United States and is the leading producer of dairy products. Much of the dairy products produced in California are exported to Mexico and Asia in the form of cheese and milk powder.

Almonds and Walnuts are grown extensively throughout California, but cannot be grown in the rest of the United States due to seasonal temperature restrictions.

Grapes are also a very valuable crop to California as California grows 91% of the total of grapes used in the United States for table grapes, raisins, and wine. The production of wine grapes in California is one-third larger than the total produced in Australia. On a global scale, if California was a separate country, it would be the world’s fourth-largest producer of wine in the world.

California produces a wide variety of crops, and many of these crops are not grown anywhere else in the United States. Some of these crops not grown anywhere else include Almonds, Artichokes, Dates, Figs, Olives, Persimmons, Pistachios, Pomegranates, Prunes, Raisins, and Walnuts. Because California can grow so many unique crops, its agricultural sector remains unrivaled by the rest of the United States.

The 2010-2011 California Agricultural Resource Directory focuses on efforts by the department, State Board of Food and Agriculture and stakeholder groups to create clear goals and strategies for a sustainable future. This process is the California Agricultural Vision for 2030; also known as Ag Vision.

The initial Ag Vision framework is a set of strategic goals to safeguard California’s agricultural and environmental heritage.

Well, nothing about radiation in the journal, however, they are using 2009 data in the 2010-2011 journal ... looks like we'll have to wait until the 2012-2013 journal to pick up 2011.

But when will the source term ever be known? How ever could it be measured?

Because aren't we into completely unknown territory here, in respect of how this gallimaufry ( of radionuclides is interacting, with added extras such as sea water, exposure to open air, rainfall?

And as numerous commenters on this blog have pointed out, along with Lapri him/herself, Cs and I are measured because they're the easiest to detect. It don't mean that's all there is to it.

Because there's a whole cocktail arriving along with the radioactive Cs and I, is there not? Including strontium, Sr90, yes?

(NB Wikipedia has "source term" as "The amount of radioactive material released in an accident" -

Environment Canada isn't responsible Health Canada is.

"Health Canada’s data does not show an increase over and above the normal day to day fluctuations. However, very minute levels of isotopes in the radiation have been attributed to the release in Japan. The actual increase in radiation measured is in the order of 0.0005 µSv per day, which is so small that it is extremely difficult to measure against normal background radiation."

Oh, please, people, learn to think.

CEREA's maps clearly state they are SIMULATIONS, how radiation MAY have spread.

The other egregious error in the title comes from lack of high school math: the map colors are LOG scale = the simulation SUGGESTS US getting 1/100th as much radiation as Japan -- at most!: 1/100th is lots LESS, not MORE!

CA censors all went back to background by end March.

The biggest problem for humanity is Pacific will be radioactive for God knows how many generations. Not only all sorts seafood comes from those waters, but lots other goodies like kelp, seaweed, and food additives in probably more processed foods than not, including carrageenan and other algae derivatives.

I USED to eat fish. And now I've gone from mostly avoiding processed foods to virtually always.

I suppose I shouldn't feed the trolls, but I am concerned by comments above that try to link the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdowns to a MacGuffin called HAARP, and in turn link HAARP to a supposed Jewish plot to control the US via nuclear weapons and nuclear power generation.

The intended effects of such comments on this website - which from the first has been dedicated to thoughtful, reasoned, evidence-backed investigation and discussion of the disaster at Fukushima and it implications for the whole world - appear to be to degrade the credibility of the site by tarnishing it with outlandish antisemitic conspiracy theory.

The existence of a theory that suggests any one individual or group would likely benefit from this disaster is in itself nuts, since plainly - to anyone who has read this site closely since the events of March - the disaster at Fukushima is lose-lose in every aspect - for Japan and its people, for the whole world.

Wherever nuclear power generation has been practised, great problems lie ahead - in rendering plants safe from the increasing number and intensity of seismic events and floods, to disposing of lethal radioactive wastes.

Problems for the ages, in fact, that can and will benefit no one, just cause immense suffering and waste of resources which could have been spent more productively had the Cold War nuclear route - weapons and power generation - not been taken back at Hanford in 1942.

The only harp involved in all this is the one the Angel of Death (see comment above by ergo @ 7:29) will be playing as radiation-induced cancer deaths rise inexorably in Japan and elsewhere in the next few decades.

Even if HAARP did what you think why HAARP Japan when certain Arabs are supposed to be the root problem?

Yep, Israel can attack everybody with outlandish weather weapons or hidden A-bombs except the people that actually cause them trouble. Makes perfect sense to a class AAA+ moron the rest of us just laugh at your childish mentality and lack of intelligence. Do y'all REALLY believe all that MONEY USD $$$$ is and has been poured into "HAARP" for pure science exclusively?

Ummmm.....if you answered "YES"........:) See me after class.

Anyway, I happen to believe, Fukushima was a deliberate attack on the Japan archipelago, using a tectonic weapon, and the latent energy of earth itself, via HAARP. I have seen a demonstration whereby ELF waves have produced something akin to a quake, albeit on a small scale.

Now, who is controlling this devilish device, I can't say, but I have some suspects = global criminal network.

PS. Why would Israel use something sophisticated like Stuxnet to terminate a website deemed offensive? All it has to do is to notify the web host that the site must be taken down, with proper incentives, one way or the other.

You stupid idiot, Japan has long been a major purchaser of U.S. Treasury bonds and last year,Japan bought about $130 billion in Treasuries. Now with the Fuku disaster cleanup eating up money like there's no tomorrow Japan will definitely be buying less treasury debt and foreign assets. That puts pressure on the US dollar! You know how many not-so-smart lying bastards have degrees from Yale? Bush, Cheney, Clinton...

Anyway, why is it so implausible that dimwit criminals in upper management at TEPCO outsmarted themselves by trying to cut costs through maintenance negligence and the severe under-assessment of seismic and tsunami risk? In 1960 there was an earthquake in Chile of 9.5M which also caused a rather huge tsunami. Why is it so hard to believe then that the eastern coast of Japan, one of the most seismically active regions in the world and also part of the same subduction zone as Chile, cannot have had a 8.9-9.1M earthquake without the help of CRAAP???

Don't you think there is enough shit surrounding what is happening at Fuku without the conspiracies? Is criminal neglect, ignored seismic risk, incompetence dealing with a nuclear crisis, media blackout, lying to the public, whitewashing radioactive particle danger....etc...not enough for you?? The nuclear mafia runs like any other criminal organization but Mother Nature turned their big risk=big money into big risk=big shit this time.

This goes for all involved.
Every aspect of the world you see is a reflection of your internal state. That is all there is to it. If your brothers, sisters, and other mirroring life forms begin to drop like flies, it is only because of the imbalance within you. The imbalance you have been too proud to face. This is an indisputable fact, and to attempt to argue against it, is only to demonstrate your own special degree of willful ignorance to far superior beings who can stamp you out in an instant. You, and only you, have the power to save the world from immanent destruction. You reside in a hologram, a simulation, designed to test your capacity to rise to the challenges presented in the experience of exponential evolution, and thus far, you have failed miserably. If you do not pass, if you do not abandon your petty little ego now, you will not be able to join the galactic brotherhood of advanced civilizations. I don't know how else to say it. We have tried to make this clear to you for centuries. It is time to stop bitching and whining. It is time to stop arguing. If only you knew how foolish you appeared to those who watch. It is time to be accountable.
