Armed with his geiger counter, the Ministry of Education's radiation map and the Professor Hayakawa's radiation contour map, he went measuring radiation levels in Koriyama City on December 23, and they were high.
Air radiation level at chest height: maximum 1.51 microsievert/hour
On the sand on the side drain cover: 42.85 microsieverts/hour
If the surface radiation is that high, it would be several hundreds of thousands of becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium in that sand. No one does a thing, and life goes on, because all the national and municipal governments care about is air radiation at 1 meter off the ground.
But even if you stay outside in 1.51 microsievert/hr radiation all day all night for one year, it would only be 13 millisieverts of external radiation. Nothing to worry about, according to the new Japanese government guideline crafted by the panel of expert scientists picked by the government (in order to obtain precisely the guideline).
Never mind that until March 11, Koriyama City's air radiation was probably below 0.06 microsievert/hour like anywhere else in northern Japan, and that's how it has been for the residents for generations.

Hello from France
And my best wishes for Christmas, if you are cool enough to take pleasure.
Many thanks to "Ultraman" for his work, I translate regularly every day on my french blog.
Hélios
Merry Christmas, Helios. Thanks for your support.
So does everyone FLOAT 1 meter off the ground in Japan? If not, I'd start measuring where people walk, ON the ground. If the GROUND is radioactive, then let's see some more published reports on those readings. How come they don't sell Geiger counter shoes in Japan yet? You know with a little red yellow and green indicator lights and maybe an audible alarm with GPS sync and cellular mapping software via mini USB or bluetooth?
The external radiation is bad, but what is far worse is the 'hot' dust blowing in the wind, ready to be inhaled by anyone. As 'birdhairjp' states in his excellent videos, SAVE THE CHILDREN.
Hello from Sendai on white Christmas Eve. I have friends in Koriyama City and Fukushima City. I worry about them...
As for me, I am leaving Sendai with my daughter to stay with my folks in western Japan for a while.
Thank you for your good work! I wish to be of your help in the future.
May the world learn from what Japan is going through...
These high-contamination hot spots can dry out and then get into air as dust.
The often-noticed nosebleeding is official of unclear nature, but some people suppose it is because of the reaction of the thin and sensitive inner-nose skin. If it gets "punctured" by hot particles creating small irradiation hot spots there, leading to bleeding. So it seems logical that children, more delicate, are more susceptible to such radiation damage.
Another often-observed effect of radiation is the metallic taste in the mouth. I suppose this is due to the ionizing effect of radiation, as the taste is quite similiar of that when you "taste" metal like the nail in the carpenter's mouth. And the latter is from dissolved (ionized) metals.
As such observations are rather disturbing than re-assuring of safety, it is clear that Tepco, the govt. and the MSM won't report about such.
Doing so would undermine the fable of "harmless radiation".
I'd love to know more about such observations in Japan. I'd also love to know more if there have been observations on the effects on animals and plants. There is little to be found (except maybe in Japanese?)
Does there exist a compilation of effects like the "Three Mile Island Testimonies" from Japan?
(You can download this 38-page-brochure here: http://www.tmia.com/sites/tmia.com/files/890327_TMI_Testament.pdf )
I ask because in Japan people apparently collect such testimonial evidence about the reactor accident's effects too.
The "Fukushima Diary" blog links to a long article and case collection (in Japanese)about medical conditions at children (possibly) caused by the Fukushima radiation.
Here the Fukushima Diary article: http://fukushima-diary.com/2011/12/nails-are-falling-off-of-tokyo-citizens/
Here is the source article (in Japanese, use translator): http://ameblo.jp/kodomotomirai/theme-10045054938.html
I'd greatly appreciate to get more information on the health effects from Fukushima actually observed... does anybody have more links about this?
And now, happy X-mas to all!

@anon at 12:39PM, thank you for the link. Isn't that interesting. Mainichi Japanese does not have anything on Suzuki or his press conference. I'll have to inform my Japanese twitter followers..
Sorry, bad link in my above post.

Konnich ha,
It may be in future that this horrible incident (tsunami and nuclear) will not only draw Japanese more closely together as a culture, but knit the entire World into a better and more cohesive fabric of humanity.
What incredible harships and loses have and continue to be endured, especially in Tohoku and Fukushima, raise so many questions their answering will require ages of future citizens to render.
The magnitude alone appears unfathomable.
I hope this is not the case and Japanese are now famous for solutions, though obviously well known too for all too human error, which hopefully sees correction, and effective monitoring.
A babbling heart may have no answer, but I wish to be included in that long list of those who want to look for, hope for, and implement workable solutions to threatening problems.
Local and neighborhood answers can be succint compared with far off government ones frequently lacking in on the spot knowledge. What is not testing at ground level considered relevant? Someone appears to be fudging here...mataogenkinaruyounisubarashiiTohokugambatte!
Best regards,
David Orr
@SFDavid, re: your first paragraph, as far as Japan is concerned, the opposite is happening.
