See for yourself. An expat from California measured the radiation level inside the train to Narita, and found it was extremely high right where he was sitting.
No, it was not his suitcase. It seems it was that particular seat where he was sitting.
Yes, his personal survey meter could be broken, as he repeatedly wonders in the video, and people just ignore the gaijin telling them the radiation level inside the train is the Fukushima level, while a woman sitting next to him praises his Japanese as native level. Surreal.
This line, Sobu-Yokosuka Line, belongs to JR East, which covers the entire Tohoku, Kanto and about half of Chubu.

I hope he immediately informed the JR stuff...
sweating it out? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHH
The post says "It seems that it was that particular seat where he was sitting". However, please note that in a later video the uploader says "It's not the seat" when he takes another measurement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqWOHfcHf2M
Chiba...well what do you expect?
I found the vid surreal/hilarious-the conversation is bizarre. He may as well have been telling the woman next to him about his new cell phone application. She was *how* interested? Maybe it's the guys shopping bag on his suitcase? Friendly Fukushima produce? Most likely it is from the floor where everyone has been treading in hot spots and walking all over everywhere like invisible deadly dog poop. People look half dead on the train anyway (as usual).
This could well start a craze. Gaijin tracking radiation on the subways and trains of Tokyo/Yokohama. Beats texting!
Well yeah, presumably the train carriage passed through a plume like the USS Ronald Raygun, maybe the passengers were caught in a sudden downpour,it was used for transporting radiation workers or evacuees.
The phrase Up the Creek springs to mind.
Try to only be seated on non porous public furniture, leatherette types, the open furry fabric material acts as a sponge.
This is most likely radiation emitted from a cancer patient being treated with radionuclides. They can emit levels even higher than those shown in this video. The fact that the levels were so much higher in the first video when the detector was away from the seat indicates that it is likely not the seat itself. Probably someone next to him or a couple of seats away. Thanks for all your good work but to post this here is probably misleading and is irresponsible in my opinion.
anonymous said it is probably cancer patient rad spill...
could be but it could also be negativity ex pres no kan do did state that the heroic japanese people will get ill not from a bit of fall out but from negativity.
the fact that less than 4% of the population are marching in outrage is proof that the healthy positive mental attitude is triumphing over the negativity.
these sad people are spreading black propaganda and telling lies about plutonium.
plutonium is good it makes people positive takes away your negative feelings.
it helps you sleep good and longtime forever.

”This is MOST LIKELY radiation emitted from a cancer patient being treated with radionuclides”
Your comment involves such a logic-defying leap in reasoning that for a moment I worried I had slipped into the twilight zone.
A quick trip to the Fukushima live camera reassured me that yes, a triple meltdown did occur.
Serioulsy, you folks kidding? A geiger counter that is a iPhone app is supposed to be reliable in any sense of the word? Someone wrote; "logic-defying leap in reasoning that for a moment I worried I had slipped into the twilight zone..."
Indeed. An iPhone app?
"A geiger counter that is a iPhone app"
Where do these people keep coming from?
He is clearly using a 2011 model Russian built SOEKS 01M. Just because the screen is in colour doesn't mean it's an iPhone, grandpa.
http://www.soeks.eu/
Why are there not more Japanese people doing this with their geiger counters? Everyone should be out measuring everywhere.
Was this before or after the typhoon? I imagine the typhoon brought a lot of ocean water across Honshu and spiked the radiation levels.
Did you see the poor Japanese school girl sitting in her skirt right beside where he was measuring? It means she was sitting on the seat in her underwear only as her skirt was rather short. This cannot be good for her health or anyone's. This is a tragedy beyond words. It is truly incomprehensible.
Why is the English teacher in this video not leaving Japan already? Insane times we live in.
I live in Chiba and own a geiger counter and use it regularly. I posted the previous comment about it probably being a cancer treatment patient. May I direct you to this link if you want further proof of my "leap in reasoning".

Thanks. I saw your post at facebook. You stated that he was being treated for thyroid cancer. Is it not possible that his thyroid issue had been caused by the Fukushima disaster?
"May I direct you to this link if you want further proof of my "leap in reasoning".
Thank you very much for the link, obviously you had very good grounds to make your supposition, and I apologize wholeheartedly for doubting your reasoning in such an impudent manner. I feel like an idiot.
It wasn't clear from your original post that you'd been regularly measuring radiation inside Tokyo train carriages and had definitively tracked the source of an unexplained high reading down to an individual cancer patient.
I notice from that link that you are rather good at identifying and measuring 'micro-hotspots' in accumulated soil from gutters and the like. Any thoughts on the JAEA study referenced in this story?
http://www.asahi.com/national/jiji/JJT201109200045.html
Thanks for sharing the facebook post. I found it very interesting. Also, your device looks handy - what is the model name?
Ah, never mind, I see that it's PM1703M. Discovered that if I click on the photo I can get other photos with closeups.
No problem, just to be clear, I do not own or run this group. Nor did I take these measurements. This is the work of the page creator not mine.
He contributes regular and valuable information on his Facebook group page Tokyo Radiation Levels. Also, many others including myself have begun to contribute information obtained with their personal radiation detectors.
Dear Anonymous,
Maybe a grandpa, but it clearly says in a comment previous to mine, "He may as well have been telling the woman next to him about his new cell phone application." hence the iPhone comment. (One should read all, if possible before commenting, no?) Not to mention that there are several iPhone apps that ostensively "measure" radiation. Maybe I am a grandpa, but I can at least read and have the manners to expect others to do so and not insult people who can... and do.
PS: As the proud owner of a Ukrainian made Terra Dosimeter-Radiometer who measures the trains and Tokyo area daily, I've yet to find anything like this. Usually, if you go looking for trouble, you find it. I haven't been able to do so for three months now.
In spite of the panic stricken hopes of many, the cancer patient explanation seems plausible... How else to explain radiation in one spot and not full contamination?
[Awesome Geiger counter, I like it very much. It's quite light and measures radiation accurately but the only drawback is its high sensitivity to mobile phone waves - it shows higher radiation levels than in fact. So, my advice is to keep it away from cellphones. The user guide is very easy to understand, I've learnt how to use the Soeks for less than a week. In my opinion, I would recommend it to everyone, who needs such device.]
maybe they are irradiated by handies?
It was 1995 as my friend hopped on a train in Tallin. He had a military russian geiger counter - which promptly went off the scale. Dunno the actual readings but he said that those devices start readings from wher civilian scales end.
This was 'Thousand miles' from Chernobyl, probably theses similar rad-carriages still rolling across CCCP, France, Sweden, US, uneamit...

On the topic of devices,.I stumbled on something called GR-135. It's a handheld nuclide identification spectrometer.
Works like this:
NUCLIDE IDENT
----------------
ISOTOPE SIZE
CESIUM-137 1234
IODINE-131 123
DEP-U 2
Identifies isotopes and their amounts on the spot (that last one is depleted uranium). Omg, now I want one ^^
The seat is contaminated and it was stationary, the landscape the train was passing through is contaminated and was not stationary in relation to the metering equipment.
If the train had stopped this gentleman would have been able to see the level of radiation at standstill.
There is little need for hundreds of cancer patients running alonside and outside the train so as to create baseless rumors.
Jesus Christ, this device is not working trains correctly because of the overhead contact line.
Electromagnetic field is causing the reading!
Not 10 microsievert in the train!
A hypothesis that should be easy to test on an identical train and track, but wait,a poster claims to have already done so..
The seat however was contaminated, what is the likelihood of a foreigner with a meter picking one of the very few contaminated seats in Japan to test and then be seated in?
It's like aha! i have found it and now to take my rightful place in Japan!
This was the Japanese equivalent of the Arthurian Siege Perilous,by some subconscious perception of radioactivity this chair is reserved only for warriors from across the sea?
I am the one who took the video. You can check out more on my blog:
http://radiation-chiba-oami.blogspot.com/
I don't have cancer, I was surprised to register such a high reading on that train, I was very scared when I saw the reading, I tried to alert the JR staff but they didn't believe me, I went to California that day and took measurements there to compare to where I live in Chiba. I will be going back to California next year, but first I want to take more readings here so the whole world knows how bad Fukushima fallout really is. I teach English here in Chiba, but I'm not sticking around after I got these readings. If you want you can contact me on my blog if you have any questions. Stay safe and away from Japan.
Alexe Kulikov
I thought it was Electromagnetic radiation from the motors but when you put that geiger up to the air vents that said it all. Arnie Gundersun a few months ago had people send him air filters from cars in Tokyo and Fukushima, plutonium was found in some air filters and other radioactive shit.... they need to change those train air filters man.
Alexe, I don't think anyone said that you had cancer, but rather that the most logical explanation is that the high reading was coming from some point within the train, probably a cancer patient traveling on the same train car. Did you measure radiation while passing through the same area on your way back from Narita?
By the way, that comment you make in the second video, "maybe someone from Fukushima came and sit down here..." Very funny, man, very funny.
this is bullshit! please ex-skf, delete this "train radiation" link from your site! It is not credible because if you ride the train in France or Italy you will get the same result.
you can't use your geigercounter in in high electromagnetic field, and the train is emitting such a field... this is fearmongering at it's best!
So, if it was an EM field emitted by the train and you can get the same result anywhere then my question is:
How do you explain that Alexe was not getting the same high readings in the same train, same spot, once the train went past Narita?
I'm referring to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqWOHfcHf2M
Also, Soeks is a common device. Chances are, some readers here have one. It should be easy to check the EM interference theory and make a youtube video. Until then I wouldn't rush to call this bs.
"....and the train is emitting such a field... this is fearmongering at it's best! September 26, 2011 10:21 AM "
Train ... one has to define the entity: One possible configuration is an locomotive pulling carriages. In such a case, no electromagnetic fields in the carriage... except from hi 25kVa voltage drive lines hanging above (when electrified rail). Cant here educate you of all the possibilites globally exist, dont know this particular japaneses...
This very same drive-line em-field and its effects can be verified at the station, outside your TRAIN. One can easily compare gauge readings in/out.
Some devices are shielded against the em-fields, some are not. What are the em-specs here?
bs? nope.
Every measurement and device can have minor/major errors, manipulation or whatever - best to be sceptic. Say 'bs' to every danger? nope. Trust papal nuke pancake science a'la TEPCO? LOL

see http://wp.me/pwIAV-19
A flow chart of possibilitis could help, there would then be leads to follow up.
But exhausting all of the possibilities is exhausting for the body.
"---> fuku is still kept open and pumping."
What are they pumping? You mean water?
I guess it's best to trust your instrument, better to be alive and feel such a fool than to hang around waiting for a sudden revelation that could be mitigating reason for high readings.
There could be a few more reasons why this seat tested high whilst moving and a lot less whilst stationary, none of which are provable or disprovable.
If you are willing to consider electromagnetic interference then in need not be limited to a powered rail or wire, some trains seem to have their power systems beneath the carriage, maybe an electro-magnetic breaking system.
Another possibility is an accumulation of hot stuff on the wheels or undercarriage that became dislodged by the action of breaking.
The passenger with the mobile phone in her pocket, the microwave transmitter in the wall of the train, waste from the toilet accumulating in a tank before being jettisoned at the station, who knows, must dash.
- Do not leave the product for a long time near devices that generate strong magnetic fields, such as magnets or electric motors, and where strong electrical magnetic signals are generated, such as transmitter towers.
- Do not perfom measurements close to cell phones and microwaves, this may affect the instrument's readings
http://soeks.co.uk/manual.html#Precautions0
Unless you can replicate the measurement, if possible with a different device etc. then I'm afraid we will never know what caused this. Could be real radiation, could be device error or other source.

How old are you? If you're not some 10 year old grade school dropout could you write intelligibly please. I'm not up to date on hip net-lingo and suspect I am not the only one scratching their head at "Lukiluki whatsinthere" I'm tempted to reply with "Goo goo gaga blahblah".

It means that the Vatican is on the verge of harnessing power from its own secret portable cold fusion technology to run highly sophisticated, lightening-fast batter mixing machines for their new franchise called PNPS(what else?) that will blow all IHOP restaurants in the US out of the water. Can't you just smell the money! And the pancakes!
I spent two weeks in Chiba in late August and early September, and my geiger counter (which I tested on some uranium ore at the local museum before I left) did not register any significant levels anywhere I went in Chiba or Tokyo. Still, hots spots have been found in the Tokyo area and this could be an example of one.

Not the retarded http://wp.me/pwIAV-19 spamming moron again. This person has been spamming the net with his mental midgetry for months now and they have only managed to create a small echo chamber with less than 400 Google hits. It must get lonely in their basement.
As the train moves down the track, the air vents are probably acting as dust collectors. Radioactive dust. They need to filter that air coming into the train and clean the filters after each commute, or at least at the end of every day.
Japanese trains have HVAC units on the roofs and it doesn't explain why some seats have higher readings than others.
The whole thing is basically useless info because nobody can replicate it or verify. Could be device error, magnetic fields, anything...
mmm...pancakes...
The meter is set to picSv/h (take a look!), so all the panicking is completely unnecessary. 10 picSv/h = 0.01 muSv/h
