(OT) Are You Right-Brained or Left-Brained? (Or Is She Spinning Clockwise or Counter-Clockwise?)

Apparently, she's spinning clockwise all the time for some, counter-clockwise for other. Some see both but cannot control the direction, and others can switch at will.

(I can switch if I focus, and it feels bizarre.)

The article that appeared in Australia's Herald Sun on October 9, 2007 says most of us see only counter-clockwise (i.e. left-brained), but when I re-tweeted this article there were many who said they could only see clockwise turn no matter how hard they try.

Clockwise for me (and I'm almost 100% right-handed and right-legged, i.e. left-brained, only switching for mouse use out of self-discipline).

Furthermore, no matter how hard I try, there seems to be no logical way that the figure could be spinning counterclockwise). I focus on different body parts (arm, foot, hair, shoulders, breasts...) and all the time there's only one possible way: clockwise. It's impossible the other way around! Impossible!

Scary - if I close my eyes and open them on her shadow, she switches spin direction. I can see her turning both ways.

Same, switches every time I close my eyes.

I'm about as left-brained a person as you can imagine, and for me she spins clock-wise only.

But when I just reloaded the page and the image load "stuttered" a bit thanks to my slow internet connection, she spun briefly the other way.

It rather depends where one chooses to put one's perspective. to make the figure turn clockwise, perceive it as viewing from slightly below, for the opposite, perceive it as viewing from the top. I find the central rotating foot to be the best switch cue. At first there are fleeting moments of reversal, but with practice it is possible to switch almost at will.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I first saw her turning clockwise then looked at the text then back again a few seconds later and she is turning counter clockwise.

I can switch her at will, tell your mind to switch her direction and click your fingers at the same time... keep doing it and it works after a while

As anon 1:35 PM suggested, if you focus only on the shadow you might see the anti-clockwise spinning.

At age 78, this the most fun I've ever had on the internet! Thanks for a great exercise in switching from one side of my brain to the other, if in fact that really IS what is going on. At first I saw only clockwise rotation... i don't care which brain I was using.
I was confident I could switch my perception if it was possible in actuality. I concentrated only on the foot closest to the "floor", and after about ten rotations I could see that foot change direction and so did the entire body. After a few minutes of effort, I could/can switch spins at the moment one leg crosses in front of the other almost at will. So far I find that my right brain is greedier for this eye-candy and holds on for a few more spins than does my left brain.
It is as though my logical brain understands the concept of "sharing" better than my emotional side.
Thanks a million for this uplifting human delight!

It's me again, after watching the black lady for a few minutes longer to find an easier way to change the way she spins, I succeeded.
All I have to do is watch the extended leg and decide whether it is her right leg, in which case she has to be spinning clockwise. If I decide that the extended leg is her left leg, I immediately see her change direction...much faster than would be humanly possible. That speed of the switch makes my 78-year-old brain feel lively indeed!

This is one of the most appetizing brain teasers I have seen in forever. I couldn't fiqure out how I kept changing it but this totally explains it.

Saw this when it was first posted many years ago. Pretty interesting stuff. I'd figured out how to change the direction back then.

If you want her to spin clockwise, focus on the silhoutte's foot rotation. If you want her to spin anti-clockwise, focus on the reflection's foot rotation. Works every time for me.

Sorry, not the reflection's foot rotation, the shadow's foot rotation. I was thinking of reflective floor because of something I worked on recently.

Which man wouldn't find this interesting? She's turning clockwise most of the time for me. With a bit of willpower I can make here dance counter-clockwise. If I lose concentration, shortly look away or close my eyes for a split second, she jumps back to clockwise. On rare occasions she starts counter-clockwise all by herself. Am I schizophrenic?
