#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: Areva's System Leaks

Good Morning, Murphy.

TEPCO did the test run of the contaminated water processing facility by Areva at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, and found leaks in more than 10 places.

Oops.

But don't worry, only minor leaks. Just like they used to have a water puddle or two in the turbine building basements.

Asahi Shinbun (10:50PM JST 6/10/2011):

TEPCO announced on June 10 that leaks were found at the facility to treat contaminated water at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant. TEPCO was doing the test run using regular water for the start of full-scale treatment on June 15, but the discovery of the leaks could delay the start.

 水漏れが見つかったのは放射性物質の除去装置。水漏れがないかの確認試験中、弁1カ所、配管接続部十数カ所に水がにじんでいる場所を見つけたという。近く、修理する。

The leaks were found on the equipment to remove the radioactive materials. TEPCO found minor leaks on 1 valve and more than 10 pipe joints. They will be repaired shortly.

 処理施設は、原子炉建屋やタービン建屋の放射能汚染水を減らす切り札として15日の稼働を目指している。遅れると高濃度の放射能汚染水をためておく場所がなくなる可能性もある。

The water processing facility was scheduled to start on June 15 to reduce the highly contaminated water in the reactor buildings and turbine buildings. If the start is delayed, TEPCO may run out of space to store the water.

 東電原子力・立地本部の松本純一本部長代理は「15日に動くかは未定。修理もあるので少し遅れる可能性がある。現場の状況が把握できていないので、どの程度修理すればいいかわからない」と話している。

Junichi Matsumoto of TEPCo said, "We don't know for sure that the system will be operational on June 15. It is possible that the date will be delayed because of the repair. As we haven't been thoroughly informed of the situation at Fukushima I [regarding the leaks], we don't know the extent of the necessary repair."

Hello, just to say I really enjoy your blog updates, very informative and it allows non-speakers of japanese like me to get a view from the inside, thank you!

Also, I seem to remember that TEPCO said there would be an overflow of the contaminated water fairly soon from the tunnels and basements which are nearly full: any news ont that? Has it been raining lately near the plant?

Unsurprising.
Any water treatment plant needs a shakedown, to identify the major leaks. That is routine.
More tricky are the minor leaks, that do not show up as more than a few drops or a faint trickle. Over time, with highly radioactive water, they will be a serious problem.
The cesium removal column appeared to be modular. Perhaps TEPCO has had enough experience with this kind of issue to have specified a repairable design.

@anon at 11:44AM, they are nearly full. They're trying to get the temporary storage tanks ready. It rained on Thursday their time, and light rain is forecasted for Saturday. No heavy rain is due next week.

@netudiant, I don't think TEPCO had any experience prior to this. I don't think they were even trained for it, because nuke plants were supposed to be so safe that there was no need to plan for nuclear emergency for more than a few hours.

What about stupid egotitistical Americans who dump their nuclear waste on innocent women and children in the form of Depleted Uranium. Look up Fallujah to see the effect of this. At least Fukushima was an accident and not a crime against humanity.
