#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: 254,000 Bq/kg of Radioactive Cesium from Fish Caught Inside the Harbor

A fish caught inside the harbor at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant was found with 254,000 Bq/kg of radioactive cesium, highest so far.

From independent journalist Ryuichi Kino's tweets, as he watches the live TEPCO press conference:

1F内の魚、10月から漁業関係者に相談して、閉止の対応をした。汚染された魚が外に出ることについて、10月以前には対応はとっていなかったと尾野さん。港湾内の魚、最大で正シウム134と137の合計で25万4000ベクレル。過去最高値。

As to the fish inside the [harbor] at Fukushima I Nuke Plant, TEPCO consulted the fishermen in October [last year] and took measures to stop the fish from escaping the harbor. TEPCO's spokesman Mr. Ono says they didn't do anything about the fish escaping the bay until October. The highest level detected so far in the fish is 254,000 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium (Cs-134 and Cs-137).

The fish with 250,000 Bq/kg of cesium was a spotbelly rockfish. Kino continues:

最高値のムラソイ、200g食べた場合には0.8ミリシーベルトの被曝。1kg食べると4ミリシーベルト。もちろん食べないけども、そういう魚がこの近くにはいるということ。港湾から外にでる魚がいないとはいえず

It was spotbelly rockfish that was found with the highest level [of radioactive cesium]. If one eats 200 gram of fish, one gets 0.8 millisievert radiation exposure. If one eats 1 kilogram, 4 millisievert. Of course no one eats [this fish, that much], but we should remember that there are fish like that near Fukushima I Nuke Plant. We cannot say for sure that no fish escapes from the harbor.

This post is so informative and makes a very nice image on the topic in my mind. It is the first time I visit your blog, but I was extremely impressed. Keep posting as I am gonna come to read it everyday! forex tips

Even if they fully closed off the harbor this wasn't done in the early days of the accident fish came and went as they pleased. The ocean contamination also didn't confine itself to just the bay in front of the facility nor did it mix uniformly like the "experts" said. We have known since the Crossroads bomb test that radiation contamination in the ocean isn't uniform but the experts act like this is a "new" unknown.

@6:43 Agreed. In the aftermath of 3/11 the "experts" were saying on NHK that the effect of radiation decreases with the square of the distance from the source -- conveniently omitting that fallout dust gets right into your lungs, your bowels and eventually your muscle and your bones, so the "distance" is in fact very small.

Same goes for alpha and beta emitters: no need to worry because the penetration power of the radiation is very low, we were told... "unless you swallow the radioactive particle", was again conveniently omitted.

And I could go on and on with examples of this kind of misinformation that the "experts" provided us in these two years...

60+µSv/h from snow?!?

(… that would mean ~165.000+ Bq/kg according to this: http://fukushima-diary.com/2012/01/radiation-snow-saint-louis o_0)

flo, what is the point of your link from one year ago? That people didn't know about natural radiation in snow one year ago, mistaking Bi and Pb peaks with those of cesium and iodine?

This is more proof that the FNPP is continually leaking not small amounts of radiation, as posited by oceanographers Ken Beussler and Jota Kanda; but also remember that ingesting radiation is much much different, qualitatively, that receiving gamma rays externally. Thus, Kino's analogy is imperfect. Internal radiation creates much more havoc on the particular cells it comes in contact with, so calling it exposure in the way Kino does makes it sounds as if you are getting a whole body dose, which it is not.

I think Kino is talking about internal exposure.

I think the number that Kino cites is actually very high, considering the internal radiation exposure from food before the Fukushima accident was only 0.4 millisievert PER YEAR in Japan.

If one eats 100 grams of this fish, that's equivalent to one full year internal radiation exposure from food.
