#Fukushima I Nuke Plant Reactor 3: Humans Entered Reactor Bldg and Did What Bots Coulnd't Do

(Not that I'm faulting those hard-working bots, mind you.)

6 TEPCO employees and 4 TEPCO affiliate company employees went to the reactor building of the Reactor 3 on July 8 afternoon. 2 TEPCO employees entered the building, measured the radiation at the location where the nitrogen injection hose would be installed (55 millisieverts/hour), and put a temporary coupler on the metal pipe that would be used for nitrogen injection.

For that 9-minute job, they received 5.34 millisieverts radiation.

Here's TEPCO's handout for the press on July 9. The English explanation reads like a Google translation (maybe it is) but you get the idea. (I looked at the Japanese handout.)

TEPCO seems to be in a great hurry to start the nitrogen injection into the Containment Vessel of the Reactor 3. At first I thought it was just a window-dressing effort for the national government who had decided, on some inexplicable reason or unreason, it would be safe enough for people to come back to their homes in the planned evacuation zone as long as the nitrogen gas was pumped into the Reactor 3 Containment Vessel, just so that the government could tell the citizens "See what we've done for you? It's now so much safer you can go back!"

Or, the Reactor 3 is actually in danger of blowing up in a hydrogen explosion.

They have hardly done any work on other reactors. The Reactor 1's basement water, last seen as gushing out 4 sieverts/hour steam through to the 1st floor, hasn't been touched. That water doesn't even go to the water treatment system. I haven't heard any news of TEPCO sampling the water for analysis. There's hardly any news on the Reactor 2, after they opened the double door and supposedly drove out the radioactive materials and moisture inside. They still don't know the water level (if any) inside the Reactor 2's Pressure Vessel, because the pressure gauge and water gauge don't work. As for the Reactor 4, they've been injecting water into the Reactor well and the equipment pool from the bottom of the Reactor Pressure Vessel, which seems peculiar. Other than that, and the photo of a hot-spring-like Spent Fuel Pool on the 5th floor, there's not much information coming out.

"TEPCO seems to be in a great hurry to start the nitrogen injection into the Containment Vessel .. They have hardly done any work on other reactors. "

I would say Mr. Packbot was detecting gammas from just about any random surface you could set your eyes on, explosion debris. Extra shielding is the theme.

Those steel plates are significant, lead aprons really aren't any less signficant.

I don't envy these guys the problem on their hands.

From other news, it does seem all the sacrifice by the workers is for this bogus deadline of July 17, when there should be no danger of hydrogen explosion and the government can declare it's safe to go home to a lot of people. Insane.

You have a much better sense of their daily imperatives, areva, living in Japan. If what you say is true, then their imperatives are as "nutty" as any of the other aging fools we've seen.

The information you presented, that they haven't even started processing the 4S/hr water, tells us they haven't been doing much of anything, the govt./central bank hasn't even bothered to print up some fictitious money to fund .. anything!

Let's be honest, we should be seeing a small army descended upon the reactors, funds aplenty.

What we will be seeing, as others have noted, is a sharp increase in infant mortalities, leukemias, thyroid cancers, birth defects .. and they will follow SPEEDI trajectories.

Sternglass, Gofman, Tamplin have documented it in the U.S., it is inevitable. They want to pretend it isn't going to happen ?!

Anonymous,

You are exactly right about a small army and plenty of funds. What really irked me in a big way was when they turned down help from the Russians. Instead of accepting assistance from a country who has dealt with a big nuclear problem
they had to save "face." My comment on that is unprintable. It just goes to show that there is no "face" to save. They are just as corrupt and greedy as the US and show no responsibility for their actions and lack of same.

The entire world should be outraged at the knuckle-dragging cretins of TEPCO and the government. Lies, lies and more lies. The lack of massive protest in Japan tells me a lot. The people are bigger sheople than most other areas in the world. Including the US. Perhaps the executives and a few high government officials should move their families to Fukushima to show the people it is as safe as they pretend it to be in their fairy tale world. Barring that I wish they would fall on their swords. They make a mockery of those who are, essentially, giving their lives to put a band-aid on this disaster.

This whole effort and half-truth news releases by TEPCO and absurd sacrificing of workers to run into lethal reactors is, useless!

Nothing can be done to stop anything that is unfolding. It's like trying to put out the Sun. Mankind has crossed a line of commonsense that he should never had crossed!

Yahtzee!

The UN needs to invade Japan and force a safe solution regardless of costs, we all need to anty up to save the planet. Screw them the money whores at a time like this. This is unprecidented and we need immediate action internationally before we all die.
