#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: TEPCO Will Fly Balloons Inside Reactor 1 to Survey and Measure Radiation

Somebody, save TEPCO or at least TEPCO workers who will have to hold two balloons just inside the truck bay of the high-radiation Reactor 1 building...

They could use a horde of these self-organizing flying robots by Vijay Kumar at University of Pennsylvania instead.

But TEPCO as being TEPCO (and now it is controlled by even less-imaginable national government of Japan), the company will send workers holding balloons with video cameras attached to survey the operating floor and measure radiation levels in Reactor 1 in early August, as the first step toward eventually removing the fuel assemblies from the Spent Fuel Pool.

Just remember the Onsen powder as tracer, baby diaper polymers and shredded newspaper to plug the hole near the water intake for Reactor 2 that was leaking the extremely radioactive water (over 1 sievert/hour radiation above the hole) in April last year. Anything is possible with this company.

From TEPCO's presentation at the Fukushima nuclear accident technology workshop, in Japanese only (7/23/2012):

Periscope was too expensive.

OT: Saw this headline on Kyodo. No details yet:

Gov't eyes legal change to require firms to hire more mentally ill

TOKYO, July 24, Kyodo

Sincerely hope there are laws in place to prevent TEPCOs contractors from taking advantage of this new law to exploit these people.

This whole cleanup is like some kind of nightmare sometimes.

Please tie Edano and Hosono to those balloons and send them in there.

I am not sure how they will drive a truck into the containment vessel? Only Visio could make this happen. When they mean August they mean next March I assume? I wonder how far along the road map we are with a tent, two removed new fuel rods and a plan with balloons?!

@wren
What a nightmare of yours! But this manoeuvre might actually work. I give you a little demonstration, so you can have better dreams tonight. You need a bear, a piglet, an umbrella, a green and a blue balloon and a gun.

@TEPCO, bring the gun in the beginning, when you commence this operation!

Why in the hell do they need two humans exposed on the back of the vehicle to operate the balloons? It seems to me this whole Rube Goldberg contraption could be operated by remote with the addition of a few more cameras. This is a pretty lame it is barely one step above a camera taped on a long stick. As Arevamirpal pointed out there are other more technologically advanced means to get the job done that wouldn't expose humans. I guess the Jgov bean counters are starting to see the ocean of red ink this cleanup operation is going to create and they're trying to stem the tide every way they can.

I am having a hard time to believe this.
Maybe it was only the Japanese version of April Fools Day?

Hydrogen balloons I bet!!(tethered to a roll of fuse cord or the rope?!!) I'd laugh if my wife wasn't scheduled to begin radiation "therapy"(??!)in a week after diagnosis, chemo, masectomy just completed for Inflammatory Breast Cancer that suddenly showed up mid-Feb of this year!! And we're in the Midwest USA,more than 7,500 miles from the disaster/release point!! TEPCO,GE,pro-nuke govt.'s~you all SUCK!!!

Not to worry about the employees..their dosimeters will be lead covered..(sarcasm)

Do they have laughing gas parties at Tepco ?
But since they are liars first of all, I wonder what kind of operation this is hiding behind a big grim laugh.

BTW, cheap onsen powder is packed with fluoresceine, a redish orange to greenish yellow substance (beautiful - depends on the concentration) used by geologists and speleologists to track the path of underground streams.
Pure fluoresceine would not have been more efficient.
It was used by medics to dry off the skin of parasites, although I suspect it is only added to onsen powder for visual satisfaction.

If I remember the post/video about the self-directing, flying robots correctly, they were not adapted yet to function in a highly radioactive environment yet? Maybe that's why humans have to do it once again because machinery can't function in this environment?

Dr. Kumar did say his flying robots are ideal for survey work at nuclear power plant, I think.

Yes. I remember too that Kumar said that, but thought it was also mentioned that they still have to be adapted to radioactive environments.
