OT: Japanese man cooks, serves own genitals to 5 paying diners

"The meal came complete with mushrooms and a parsley garnish", according to the article on France24.

Japan is a bizarre place. No question about it.

From France24, quoting AFP (5/25/2012):

AFP - A Japanese artist cooked his own genitals and served them to five paying diners in Tokyo to cover the medical costs, in a bizarre act to raise awareness about sexual minorities.

Mao Sugiyama had his penis and testicles surgically removed in March and kept them frozen for two months before dishing them out -- seasoned and braised -- to customers at an event hall on May 13, according to postings on his Twitter account and local police.

Diners paid 20,000 yen ($250) for the plate with a portion of genitals. Pictures published on a website appeared to show the meal came complete with mushrooms and a parsley garnish.

The painter, who is reportedly 22, said on Twitter the organ had been removed by a physician and certified to be free of infections.

The meal was prepared under the supervision of a certified cook and diners were required to sign a waiver indemnifying Sugiyama and event organisers.

In May 18 tweets, the artist said steps were taken so the act met all relevant laws, including a ban on organ sales, processing of medical waste and even food sanitation requirements.

"I receive questions from some women and men... asking 'Will there be a next time? Please host it again.' But there is only one set of male organ," he tweeted on May 16.

"Unfortunately, I have no plan for the next time."

Sugiyama, who considers himself "asexual", that is without gender, initially thought about eating the genitals himself, but decided to solicit paying customers to help pay his hospital bills for the surgery.

In an email to AFP, he confirmed the event had taken place and said it was organised to raise awareness about "sexual minorities, x-gender, asexual people". He said he was readying to publish an official account of the day.

Police in Tokyo said they knew of the episode, but added that it had not broken the law as cannibalism was not illegal in Japan.

"We are aware of the case. There was nothing (criminal) to it. It does not violate any detailed rules. There is nothing to take action about," an officer at Suginami police station told AFP.

Oh, please, UltraMan, do not ever run such a revolting headline on me again. Way too disturbing. This is my request.

"...what will they do next....?"

Cannibalism. There, chew on that one for a while!

My compliments to the patrons; they had the balls to eat! :)

I hope this phenomenon doesn't catch on, you are what you eat, after all.

In retrospect, i think TEPCO mgmt should have their own individual meals prepared for themselves, IMHO.

Japan's society collapsed? I think about 120 million Japanese would find that comment to be a bit amusing.

Even more shocking: they did not check if this meal exceed the Japan’s national provisional safety limit for levels of radioactive cesium in food. ;)

I would have been more shocked if I hadn't known the truth about another psychopath, Issei Sagawa. While studying in France, he killed and ate parts of a Dutch woman, returned to Japan, and after spending a few months in a psychiatric hospital, was released, and subsequently became a folk hero, even appearing on television as a cook. He lives off an extraordinary inheritance left by his father, and spends his days frequenting bars and clubs in Roppongi. He still says he wants to eat young caucasian women, but won't do it because now he "knows it's not good." So to all you young caucasian women in Roppongi, watch out. You look delicious to this hannibal.

Anonymous at May 25, 2012 5:15 PM is actually right. Dr. Helen Caldicott says Cesium 137 accumulates in testicles.

As such, it is quite possible that this artist violated the law for serving his body parts that are most likely highly contaminated with Cesium 137, given that he is a Tokyo resident.

But all of this does not matter in Japan anymore. It has now become a country where real criminals like TEPCO executives, corrupt politicians and government regulators are openly permitted to roam free, not even arrested, and psychopath like Issei Sagawa are given a celebrity status.

I used to joke to American friends that if our daughters do not date a Japanese man, it is a motherhood success. Not a joke anymore, the whole country is sick.

This from a Japanese mother...

@Anonymous - "Wow the Japs are fucked up man.."

Would it not be proper to simply say that these consenting adults were "fucked up"? Why denigrate all Japanese (or any other arbitrary nationality or race) people for what could be considered immoral acts? Oh, sorry, I started thinking of TEPCO while typing!

P.S. - What does Hannibal the cannibal enjoy with his eggs & toast in the morning?

Answer: Kevin Bacon.

The truth is the truth. And I totally appreciate your reporting reality as it is.

Without knowledge and truth we have not the proper perspective.

We can only act on what we know about. Knowledge of the reality surrounding us is paramount.

Thanks again.

@anon 5:15, isn't that the truth! My favorite comment as it is so true.

Cooked Cock and Bollocks just what Japan needs right now, take their minds off the Bollocks being served up by the mass media over there regarding Fukushima

How is this any more shocking than some of the whack jobs the US has produced, like Wayne Gacy, Albert Fish, Jeffrey Dahmer etc?

And it wasn't even than long ago that some guy in Germany met some other dude over the internet and willing died for the former bloke so he could eat him, and German police didn't press any charges.

People call Japan fucked up? The whole world is fucked up!

He would have served more people but he is a short order cook

To some degree, I can understand the artist's actions. There was at least some rational thought, motives, and purpose involved. For what I have absolutely zero understanding is the diners!

But agree wholeheartedly with some posters here: don't take a headline story about a few and draw conclusions about the nation as a whole or single out the Japanese. Deranged people are plentiful in every country.

sure, mad people are plentiful in every country.
But in every country, cannibalism is illegal, not in Japan. This is really shocking.
